Al Hambra

Great tapas in a stunning setting

  • Al Hambra
  • Saturday Brunch (Saturday)

The Saturday Spanish fiesta offers a buffet selection of dishes, plus Spanish grape beverage. Dhs260 (soft drinks). Dhs350 (house grape and hops).

One of the many restaurants in Madinat Jumeirah’s sprawling five-star complex, Al Hambra wins instant points for its romantic abra access route down the hotel’s seafront waterway. A seat on the terrace, with great views of the Burj Al Arab, also adds to the sense of relaxation and promises great things. Which are then lived up to, with caveats. Your experience begins with some tasty tomato potato bread, served with a punchy aioli on the side, as well as some top class olives. What follows is generally similarly impressive. There are some genuine highlights on the menu, such as a portion of outrageously good Spanish anchovies, patatas bravas with a perfectly crisp exterior, must-try beef cheeks and melt-in-the-mouth stewed octopus. In fact, the only let-down in our opinion is the trio of gazpachos, which though pretty in presentation are drab – way more style than substance. Service can be shaky at times, but it’s a rustic and atmospheric venue, if a little on the pricey side. Al Hambra

Situated within the bowels of Al Qasr, which literally means the palace, Al Hambra gives a taste of Spanish staples. Fairly large area with columns joined by arches with high ceiling and tables spaced out just right, it exudes a disarming charm. Last night barring a few, most tables were occupied. Spanish music played throughout.
My waiter, Chandra, explained the dishes. Fresh, discus shaped bread with salsa and garlic cream dip promptly served. The bread held vertically in a receptacle with the dips on either side was very nice. Beef strips served separately. Ordered for 2 tapas- fried calamari and pork chorizo. Calamari was served with lemon and garlic cream. Breaded calamari with the salty, fried slices of the fatty sausages not to forget the garlic cream seemed like an overindulgence of unhealthy eating. Felt already full after the tapas which is ideal for sharing by 2. The main course was the seafood paella with lobster bisque, shrimps, calamari and mussels. It was highly recommended but was only average. Had the sangria tinto to go with the food.
Good sized portions, genuine Spanish food and attentive service are the plus points here.
    The bill:
    Sangria tinto - AED 50
    2 tapas - AED 70
    Seafood paella - AED 125

Great place, music a bit too loud (we were far from the stage, but still noisy if you wanted to have a proper conversation). friendly service. A good spot overall.
