Shame on Wafi Gourmet
On November 18th, Sunday evening I went to Wafi Gourmet in Dubai Mall with my mom, my sister and my 7 year old niece who are all visiting town for a week. We have been to this restaurant multiple times before and it used to be one of favorite restaurants in Dubai based on their quality of food and their great location by the fountain. As usual we put our names down on their waiting list for a table. In the meanwhile I took my niece to the bathroom inside the shopping mall. When we returned my mom and my sister were already seated on a nice table outside overlooking the fountain. My sister had already ordered food for my niece since she was very hungry. When they served my niece’s kebab we ordered dinner for ourselves. In ten-fifteen minutes, they served us our appetizers and in around twenty-thirty minutes after that they brought us our main courses. By that time, my niece was already done with her food and she wanted to draw Burj Khalifa while we are having our dinner. (It’s a tradition for her, every year she draws Burj Khalifa from this restaurant.) We realized that we didn’t have any pens or pencils with us. We called for a waiter and asked for one. As a response we were told that we are not supposed to sit there in a rude manner. We were quite puzzled by his response. He half explained that there is a new rule by the municipality that kids are not supposed to sit in smoking areas. We said we didn’t know about this rule, we would be happy if they move us to the non-smoking section. He responded that all the seating outside is for smoking tables and asked us how we were seated on the table in the first place. We replied, as usual we put our name down on the list and then seated on that table by the wait staff. The waiter disappeared without saying anything further. In a couple of minutes later, his manager showed up. Without any greeting, he told us in a very condescending tone that there is a sign next to the waiting list about this rule and we should have already read that sign. Also he said that he learned from his colleague that when we were seated on that table, there were only two adults and insinuated us of sneaking a kid afterwards without their knowledge. We told him that my niece was in the bathroom with me at the time they were seated. Also we told him we were on this table for almost an hour (all four of us), we were served four times by different waiters until then, and nobody brought up this issue until then. If they were to bring it up, we could have gone to one of the many non-smoking restaurants that are next to Wafi that have outdoor seating or we could have choose to sit inside. And also honestly I didn’t realize the sign next to the waiting list. That area is always very crowded, if they place such an important note there, they should have also pointed out the sign as they are taking my name and number. He didn’t respond to any of my comments, instead he told us that this rule had been in place for almost twenty days, it’s been on the major newspaper and he blamed us not knowing about this rule until now. My sister and my mom are not living in UAE and I don’t follow UAE newspapers regularly. In the meanwhile, all of our main courses got cold. He didn’t apologize or take any responsibility. He didn’t even offer to move us to a table inside or change our main dishes. In fact he kept insisting that we should have read the sign and should have not sneak my niece even though we told him the whole story. At the end, he said “ok,ok sorry” and left our table. We were quite shaken after this incident, we asked for our check immediately and left the restaurant.
I am fortunate enough to travel to many countries around the world and I can easily say that last night was my worst restaurant experience by far. It ruined one out of eight precious nights I have with my family. It scared my little niece and we were insulted. I am very happy about this new rule in Dubai and I fully support it. It was not the rule itself, it was how poorly this rule communicated with us in this restaurant and how poorly we were treated afterwards disappointed us. Wafi used to be my favorite destination to bring visiting family. Following this experience I will not return.
