Whilst shopping at the Union Corp On Al Wasl Road, my hungry belly rumbled with the smell of the bakery and i was tempted to start eating my baguette before I ventured to the check out. I resited and completd my shopping and went to the conveyor belt.
I chatted to the checkout girl and asked her ' anywhere around here walking distance where I can have some good food ?' her response ' McDonalds madam ? .. I cried . then a clearing of the throat the gentleman behind me said ' around the corner is a resturant called Zaina where you have good food at good price, we eat all the time'.
My old mantra played back in my head ' want to eat good food, go where the locals go' so I thanked the man and went.
In I went to Zaina and was seated at the majlis ie carpet booth. The staff placed a sheet of plastic in front and placed a bowl of salad and soup. The soup was a deep chicken flavoured broth which was warm and soothing and the stuff which will cure me when I have influenza.
We ordered Maandi as that was what the staff recommended. Along came a huge platter of rice with half a chicken and a bowl of tomato chutney. Drinks came neat, straight from the can without a straw ! We ate. The combination of these 3 components was simplicity and sheer bliss to eat. Food doesnt have to be complicated with 20 ingrediants on the plate for it to be interesting and delicious and Zaina proved this exactly. It was very reasonably priced. Seated here I remember Zaina with a smile on my face, a happy Bank manager and my diary ready pencilling in another trip to this little treasure I found !
