40 hungry readers, one giant bear and more burgers than we've ever seen
Time Out staff
They said it couldn’t be done. They said it was impossible, too big a challenge, just too plain massive. And yet, at exactly 3pm on a warm Monday afternoon, Time Out’s Big Burger Bus fired up its engines, 40 lucky winners cheered with sheer meat happiness, and the quest to find Dubai’s greatest burgers was on.
After thousands of votes, hundreds of sandwiches and a bus tour across the city the kiwi-owned restaurant chain proved to be the ultimate victor. A huge congratulations to Gourmet Burger Kitchen and thanks to everybody who voted, ate and reviewed burgers with Time Out. Check out the original burger shortlist here.
That shortlist ranged from expensive fine dining options (yes, you get posh burgers) to the cheap and cheerful (they need no introduction) and sent our server into meltdown, as we asked you, the readers, to whittle the number down to a top five.
And whittle you did, in your thousands, coming up with a final list that caused more controversy than Sammy the Shark’s current location (still no photographs, seriously?): McDonalds, Burger King, Fat Burger, Johnny Rockets and, of course, Gourmet Burger Kitchen.
Radio disk jockey’s spat with indignation, national newspaper writers lambasted the line-up; how could this be? How could cheap and cheerful be shortlisted over their expensive counterparts? But you spoke and we listened (something the rest of Dubai’s media should try, perhaps).
It’s not for us to judge, oh no, if you want McDonalds on the shortlist, on the shortlist it goes. And from the thousands who entered their votes, our computer chose a lucky fifty to join Time Out for the afternoon they’ll still be talking about for years to come: the Big Burger Challenge.
Five Burgers, five hours, one bus, a big yellow bear and the chance for one lucky contestant to win a trip for two to New York. With scorecards at the ready, Time Out travelled the length of our fair city, stopping at each burger location to test the very best they could muster.
And what an adventure! Fat Burger cooked ‘till they dropped, Johnny Rockets sent out their dancing staff to keep entertainment levels at a maximum and Gourmet Kitchen didn’t even break into a sweat at the sight of 50 burger hungry readers and a big yellow bear descending on their DIFC location. And when the final scores had been counted and we couldn’t eat a morsel more, it was time for the big draw. Who would win the trip to New York?
Jenny Haddad that’s who! Congratulations Jenny. Check out her reaction on the official event video at the top of this page.

I know for a fact that Johnny Rockets serves the best burgers in Dubai. a burger that has the perfect balance of ingredients. One that doesn't crumble in your hans. One that is not disguised with a million ingredients to camouflage the taste of what a real burger is all about. Hand-packed one by one, juicy, fresh ingredients, Beef tomatoes even in their home-made chili, Iceberg lettuce and the best milk shakes known to man. Add to that, entertainment, and a friendly staff.
Couldn't get a better burger. All the new-comers are amateurs as far as i am concerned.

The presence of McDonalds and Burger King on a best burger shortlist merely serves to strengthen my convictions that the general public are numpties of the highest order.
please have a little more dicsipline for the general public and "tie your tongue" lol .
when you talk about Mc Donalds and Burger King, you should check the names on the "50 burger hungry readers " List.
for the burgers I give Fat Burger 9/10 J.Rockets 7/10 & GBK around 5/10.
try InterContinental DFC, they do one of the best burgers.

To be honest, i tried this burger at uptown mirdiff & it was amazingly delicious, espcecially the bbq burger. But when i recommended it to my friend & she tried the mirdif city center branch, she said it wasnt that good, so i guess not all the branches are as good. So for my advice if you want to taste the best of this burger, go to uptown mirdiff branch.......gooood luck guys

I participated in this contest and without doubt I thought fat burger won hands down, moreover it seemed to be the winner from my casual conversation with a few participants. The only way I can accept Fat burger losing is to say I didn't talk to all the participants.
Lastly, Time Out Dubai gets a lot of cool points for making my day :)
