A Time Out reader asked us where to get the best nihari in town. So we sent our food editor out to investigate.
Q. Where does one get the best nihari in Dubai? I’ve tried the dish at a few restaurants in Sharjah, but nothing comes close to the taste we get in New Delhi.
A. Nihari (from the urdu word nihar, meaning morning) is a popular breakfast dish in Delhi, India. It is essentially a spicy stew made from lamb or beef shank. Ideally, it is cooked for long periods of time, allowing the meat to become incredibly tender. In Dubai, Delhi Restaurant in Deira is an institution (it has been around for 30 years, making it ancient history in this town), and is known for having the best nihari. While they like to keep mum on their secret recipe, they admit that part of the secret is cooking it for a full 12 hours.
Delhi Restaurant, Sara Building, Frijmurar Road, Deira (04 271 1885). Dhs12-21.
