On a mission to find the best Russian foodstuffs in Dubai Time Out crosses the threshold of the Lucky Mini Store.
Wow, stepping in here is like stepping into mini Russia. [Laughs] Yes. We have many Russian products. We have lots of customers from Russia, as well from the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and all over the former Soviet Union.
Are all your customers from Russia, or near Russia? No, we have some other customers. A British man came in earlier today, and he loved it. He left with some tvorak [Russian farmer’s cheese].
What are the shop’s best-sellers? Borscht, potato pelmeni (meat dumplings) and golubtsi (stuffed cabbage).
What do you like from the shop? Me? I like the kasha (buckwheat), and I love all of the kielbasas (sausage). I also like black bread and smoked fish.
How long have you been in Dubai? Nine years. I love this country. I feel like it’s my country. This country gave me a belief in God. Before I came, I didn’t believe in God. Now, my husband and I go to church every Friday.
How long have you worked at this shop? Not long, just one month. Before that I had a problem. I hadn’t worked for a year because I hurt myself in a fire at my apartment. Luckily, my neighbour called the police and said, ‘We see a woman and we see fire.’
Wow. That’s so scary. It was scary. But now I’m glad to be working again. I really love people, and in this job, I get to meet all sorts of people.
