Time Out Dubai staff
Many things come to our minds when thinking of The Ivy. Relaxed long lunches, sophisticated décor and top-class service being just three. What we aren't expecting at its Friday Brunch are unruly toddlers, mass singalongs and shoppers popping in from The Boulevard for a boogie with their babies.
The juxtaposition between our expectations and the reality mean it's difficult to settle in for the afternoon. The live singer, as good as he is, has to turn his PA up so loud that it's difficult to hear yourself think. Staff veer between the very, very good and the slightly confused. The crowd is a mix of youngsters and their disinterested parents, older couples and celebrating groups.
The eight-course tasting menu is amazing, at first. Courses of simple but perfect pea soup, tomato and olive bruschetta, salmon ceviche and smoked duck breast and carrot salad are as good as you will find anywhere in Dubai. But once it gets to the main courses things tail off (our patience with the din is also wearing thin at this point). Neither the sea bream or the beef short rib dishes offer much in the way of seasoning, depth of flavour or texture and the mixed dessert platter leaves us cold.
But maybe it wouldn't seem all that bad if the atmosphere was more refined. Dhs299 (soft drinks), Dhs499 (house beverages), Dhs599 (bubbly), Dhs699 (French bubbly). A la carte. Fri 12.30pm-4pm. The Boulevard, Jumeirah Emirates Towers (04 319 8767).
