Time Out Dubai staff
Get ready for organic shopping sprees, visits from celebrity chefs and the birth of a home-grown food TV star.
Let’s start with some comforting news that summer must nearly be over, because Dubai’s organic market scene is getting ready to bloom once again. Greenheart Organic is getting set to launch its first ever market day, taking place on Saturday October 5 from 11.30am-3.30pm. The event is being held in collaboration with ayurvedic concept Balance Café in the Oasis Mall. Visitors are promised a selection of Greenheart’s fresh, organic and local produce to buy, such as vegetables, fruit, honey, eggs and cheese. Also taking place will be a live cooking demonstration with chef Yogesh from Balance Café, a three-course, all-organic lunch menu and the chance to get a discounted organic facial at the Balance Spa.
As if that wasn’t enough organic bang for your buck, Ripe has also announced a new location for its weekly Friday farmers’ market. Starting from Friday November 1, (9am-2pm), the event will now be taking place in Safa Park.
There is celebrity news afoot, too. TV chef George Calombaris will be returning to Atlantis The Palm this month, having recently filmed an episode of Masterchef Australia at the hotel’s seafood restaurant Ossiano in June. The judge and prolific Melbourne restauranteur (with seven venues in the city) will be in Dubai on Friday September 27. Chef George will be hosting a special edition of the Seafire brunch to celebrate a year since the Friday event was launched. Diners will have the opportunity to try some of his signature dishes as well as meeting the chef. On the evening of the same day, George will also be preparing a six-course gala dinner at Ossiano, featuring dishes from his Melbourne restaurant The Press Club. There are also murmurs that George has his eye on opening a new restaurant in Abu Dhabi.
Elsewhere, Dubai-based chef and entrepreneur Marta Yanci from catering company Marta’s Kitchen is set to become something of a TV celebrity in her native Spain. In addition to her regular cooking appearances on Dubai One’s show, Studio One, Marta has just finished filming 22 episodes for Spanish cooking show Canal Cocina, due to air in October. Previous chefs to appear on the show include Gordon Ramsay, as well as three Michelin-starred Catalan super-chef Ferran Adrià.
Filmed in Spain, the series will feature Marta preparing a meal for two or four, with a challenging budget of only five euros (Dhs25). For now, the programme will be airing in Spanish, and in case you don’t have satellite TV, episodes will also appear on the Canal Cocina’s YouTube channel. There will be a Dubai twist to the content and Marta has revealed that Dubai culture and cooking feature prominently in the new show. She aims to share the flavours of the region with viewers, and will even be preparing a traditional Emirati dish.
