We get a lesson at the fish market and eat our way through machboos and macaroons for National Day.
Following the launch of Frying Pan Adventures at the beginning of this year, culinary walking tours that take place with blogger Arva Ahmed at the helm, a brand new tour has just been added to the itinerary. The sustainably focussed seafood tour involves a 30 minute lesson at the Shindagha fish market, with Sea Mood restaurant. This eatery serves only sustainable species, sourced every morning from the fish market, and they will be teaching guests on the tour what varieties of fish to look out for, as well as how to select the best and freshest fish. The tour then continues with a three course lunch at Sea Mood, located in Satwa.
But the big news this week is National Day, taking place on Monday December 2. Head to the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, which will be serving a buffet of local cooking classics at Imperium from Saturday to Monday this week. On Monday, Emirati chef Mussabeh will be on hand, hosting a live interactive cooking station and even giving out recipe cards for some of the Emirati dishes being made.
Zpizza in Dubai Marina is also in patriotic spirits serving a special until Saturday December 7 of the rustica flatbread (for Dhs42). On a bed of roasted garlic and cheese sauce, the flatbread is topped with feta, red and green peppers, grilled chicken, kalamata olives, jalapeños, coriander and beef pepperoni. And guess what? It’s all laid out in the design of a UAE flag. Yum.
Over in Deira, Rainbow Steak House will be hosting a National Day inspired buffet, with over 150 dishes, including local dishes such as koftat samak, fish machboos, lamb margougat and mixed kebabs. The event will take place from Sunday December 1-2, for Dhs84 per person.
Meanwhile, Yemeni foodies Mandilicious will be giving away a free Khaleeji-style coffee, teamed with chocolate covered dates and a mini UAE flag for diners heading to branches at Arabian Center, Times Square Mall and JAFZA between Friday November 29 and December 2. But Mandilicious is not just celebrating the union, it is also celebrating the launch of a brand new outlet in Lamcy Plaza, due to open in December. There’s also a plan afoot to open a total of nine outlets across the UAE in the next 12 months.
French Bakery is also in on the act with a selection of sweet treats introduced for National Day. The extensive selection ranges from cookies, to eclairs, to ice-cream lollipops to macaroons, all decorated in green, red, black and white. It is also stocking whole cakes.
And finally, we sign off the National Day dining news with an obligatory flag-frosted cupcake. This year, they come from newcomers Vogue Café in Dubai Mall, who’s selling the sweet treats for Dhs17 each. Happy 42nd National Day, and happy eating everyone!
