Celebrity chef visit, pop up menu and a food festival in Dubai

A three-star chef goes low-key, there’s more from a TV celebrity chef and a pop-up menu by local personalities.
Anticipation is rising following news that three Michelin-star chef Heinz Beck has plans to launch a second concept in Dubai (the first being Social by Heinz Beck in the Waldorf Astoria The Palm). While Beck’s famous La Pergola in Rome is the three-star pinnacle of his cooking, he has described Social in conversation with Time Out Dubai as ‘de-formalised fine dining’. This new concept, however, will be Beck’s first-ever casual dining launch anywhere in the world. Taste of Italy is scheduled to open in February next year in the new Galleria mall on Al Wasl Road. The Italian eatery promises a retail section for desserts, gelato, pastry and bread.
In other chef news, TV’s Sanjeev Kapoor has recently opened his latest Dubai restaurant in Al Murooj Rotana. The property has just officially launched a host of new dining options, including Sura Vie by Sanjeev Kapoor.
The restaurant serves Indian fusion food to a contemporary Indian soundtrack. The name is derived from the Indian word for music (‘sur’), as well as the name of an Indian beverage that dates back to the fourth century BC (‘sura’), and the French word for life (‘vie’). Also new at Al Murooj Rotana is pan-Asian restaurant Sra Bua (which has a few European twists), El Fuego bar and AER Garden Café located on the terrace.
For more personalities in the kitchen, make your way down to Urban Bistro on Sunday November 16. The café has introduced a new monthly ‘Hijack the Kitchen’ pop-up promotion whereby local characters take over for an evening. The next event sees local business owner and endurance athlete Tom Otton take charge of the menu for the night. News on what Tom will be cooking is still to be confirmed.
And it’s promotions galore at The Oberoi Dubai this month too. Until November 29, Umai hosts the white gold promotion, during which the restaurant will use Italian white truffles from Alba, but with an Asian twist. At Ananta, a Rajasthani food festival will take place from Thursday November 13 to Saturday 22. Meanwhile, from Wednesday November 19, Nine7One is offering an inventive promotion of recipes that will each combine fire and ice. Examples of this include Gazpacho snow with almond and garlic, Hokkaido scallops with kumquat chutney in bamboo leaves, and a seafood tower of Maine lobster, gamba roja, razor clams and blue mussels.
These dishes will also be brought to the table with a little drama, including fire, liquid nitrogen and more.
Also at The Oberoi Dubai, Iris Dubai has introduced a new ‘lite’ section to its menu. Recipes include mixed green salad with beetroot and mustard vinaigrette; Scottish salmon tartare with ginger and quinoa and a signature dish of lime marinated, corn-fed chicken.
