This week we bring you news of new openings, revamped menus and a pizza festival full of interesting recipes
Following our exclusive pre-Ramadan announcement that table 9 by Darren Velvick had breathed its last, we can now tell you that chef Darren is still in Dubai, and with a fresh restaurant on his agenda. His new project, The Croft Restaurant & Terrace, is due to open soon at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites. The British eatery will bring together memories of Darren’s own rural English upbringing in modern restaurant form. Also coming soon from England is a brand-new Peruvian venue, but this time by a Michelin-starred chef. Virgilio Martinez is due to bring his successful London restaurant Lima to Dubai, opening early next year (head to page 53 to learn more about this new launch). New to Downtown Dubai is a second branch of the Pier 7 restaurant Fumé. A new addition to the Downtown menu is a selection of breakfast items, which will include popular regional dish shakshouka and a full English breakfast. Staying in Downtown, we bring you more dining news in the form of Clinton Street Baking Company’s daily baking special for the last weeks of summer, available until Wednesday September 30. Each day of the week, customers can pick up packages of the day’s special of sweet and savoury baked goods. It’s scones on Sundays (chocolate chunk, herb and goat’s cheese), muffins on Mondays (banana chocolate, granola bran), ‘brookie’ brownie-cookies on Tuesdays, cookies on Wednesdays and ‘blondies’ butterscotch brownies on Thursdays. There are yet more refreshed summer menus on the cards this week. First up is that from the award-winning Qbara. The restaurant is offering summer specials until mid-September. These include seven-spiced crispy salmon with tomato jam and mastic, and a bastilla dessert of sweet milk and strawberries. Elsewhere, The Sum of Us has also recently refurbished its menu. The café, bakery and coffee roastery has introduced several new dinner options, which include confit duck leg with roast parsnips, braised shallots, brussels sprouts, lentils and beef bacon, pan-fried ricotta gnocchi with celeriac puree, roast oyster mushrooms and sautéed kale, and a lemon myrtle risotto with roasted cod, sour cream and chilli oil. Ending the week on a festive note, Carluccio’s is running a pizza festival from now until Sunday September 27. As part of this fest, the Italian restaurant is offering a special pizza menu featuring savoury recipes such as duck confit with fresh figs. Sweet recipes are also available, such as the mascarpone and passion fruit cream concoction and the Nutella and sliced banana pizza. During this time, Carluccio’s is also holding pizza masterclasses for children. Until next week, bon appétit!
