Food news from Russia with love to the land of the pharaohs, plus a movie night with organic drinks in Dubai
Although there is a great wealth of Russian expats in Dubai, this community’s food has only been represented by the lower end of the restaurant scale. Until now, that is, because a brand-new Slavic concept has recently been announced. For the first time in Dubai, this new venue will offer a fine and contemporary Russian dining experience. Vesna, which means ‘spring’ in Russian, will be run by well-known Eastern European chefs Angelova Irina and Maksim Tvorogov. The new restaurant will offer tasting menus and unique dishes such as Ukrainian borsch made with Indian spices and chicken Kiev coated with Japanese panko breadcrumbs. Vesna will also offer entertainment with a schedule of regular live music as well as DJ sets. Located at the Conrad Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road, Vesna is currently due to open in October.
From Mother Russia (and neighbouring countries) to the land of the pharaohs, now, with news that a brand-new Egyptian restaurant has just opened in Bur Dubai. Pharaoh Café & Restaurant at Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa promises both Egyptian and Mediterranean cooking, including a number of vegetarian- and vegan-friendly recipes. On the menu, you’ll find classics such as koshary and karkade (hibiscus tea), plus a less traditional camel burger, too.
Since barely a week goes by in Dubai without a new Latin venue opening, you’ll hardly be surprised to hear that yet another Peruvian restaurant is coming soon to DIFC. Ceviche will be located at Emirates Financial Towers and on the menu, you can expect ceviches (of course) and tiraditos, plus other traditional dishes such as ‘chupe’ shrimp soup, ‘causa’ potato cakes and ‘lomo saltado’, the nation’s famous beef stir-fry. There will also be a fusion section, featuring a few Nikkei touches.
If you’re feeling lucky, read on. Original Wings and Rings in DIFC has introduced a new ‘King of Wings’ eating contest, which will take place on Monday August 31 at 8pm. Eat as many spicy buffalo wings as possible in two minutes and if you’re in the top three, you’ll stand a chance of winning an iPhone 6 (first place), a Dhs1,000 dinner voucher (second place) and Dhs500 dinner voucher (third place).
Finally, we leave film fans with news that Tr!beca Kitchen + Bar is screening a series of flicks as part of its ‘Movie Mondays’ night. Turn up and for just Dhs50, and you’ll get a glass of organic beverage and a bluetooth headset, for use while you watch movies including Wall Street (August 24), Zoolander (August 31)and Back to the Future (September 6).
