Amy Mathieson checks out the big pizza pies at the brand-new Luigia in JBR
Do as the Romans do, they say. And as Romans are the forefathers of pizza (yes, panis focacius), then we will certainly adopt their lead. Pizza as we know it is claimed by Naples, when tomato sauce was added those flatbreads, and pizza as we like it is whipped up at Luigia, the recently opened Italian restaurant in Rixos Premium Dubai.
Boasting “authentic Italian home-cooking”, the opening of Luigia in the city brings the chain’s global total to five – with restaurants across Switzerland.
Founded by Luigi Guarnaccia and Enrico Coppola, there’s a lengthy menu, with plenty of tasty sounding pizzas, all cooked in the specially built Neapolitan wood-fired oven. It includes Margherita Bufala, made with San Marzano tomatoes (a plum tomato grown in the rich volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius), buffalo mozzarella and torn fresh basil.
Luigia prides itself on serving “The Best of Italy”, sourcing only the “freshest and best quality ingredients” – such as those tomatoes – and following only the most authentic “tried and tested” recipes, handed down from generation to generation, says the team behind it. They draw inspiration from the love given by Italian grandmothers to their families through the art of cooking.
Antonio Gonzalez, of Sunset Hospitality, the group bringing the restaurant to Dubai, adds, “We want our guests to feel like they are pushing the door open to Italy, sharing a friendly moment while enjoying the pleasure and flavour of Italian dolce vita”.
