The H Dubai hotel’s pub will become The Lion by Nick & Scott
Once an American bar before becoming a British East End-style pub, The Black Lion at The H Dubai hotel is on track for another change of identity – only this time, we’ve got a feeling it’s going to stick.
Why? Because it’s about to be helmed by acclaimed local chef duo Nick Alvis and Scott Price, the pair behind Souk Madinat Jumeirah’s folly by Nick & Scott. In February of this year, the restaurant walked away with the gong for Best European at the Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards, so expectations are high for Alvis and Price’s second venture in the city with partners Gates Hospitality.
Having previously revealed it has been their long-held dream to run a pub, we’re excited to see what the duo do with the Sheikh Zayed Road spot, which is currently undergoing a revamp of its interiors.
If the menu is anything to go by, things are looking very promising indeed.
Saturdays and Sundays see a Match of the Day Roast on offer, featuring all the trimmings and a pint for Dhs110, while on weekday lunchtimes (noon until 4pm) you’ll be able to drop in for a toastie and a cup of tea for Dhs48. (You can even WhatsApp the pub to get it prepared for a speedy takeaway.)
There’s also set to be a happy hour from Saturday to Thursday, with selected drinks priced at Dhs33 between 4pm and 7pm.
Starters and snacks include classic (yet no doubt elevated) dishes such as chicken liver pate with chutney and toast, crispy whitebait with smoked paprika and lemon aioli, buttermilk chicken wings, sausage rolls, and Scotch eggs with wholegrain mustard – all priced under Dhs50.
When it comes to mains, you’ll be able to mutter indecisively over a list of salads and mains such as beef pudding with mash and gravy, Angus burger in a sourdough bun with ranch dressing and veal pancetta (fancy), and breaded veal escalope with double fried egg, hand-cut chips and brown sauce. Alternatively, tuck into a range of toasties (priced at Dhs42 each, with French fries) including mature cheddar with pickled red onion, curried chicken mayo, or fish fingers and tartare sauce.
