IKEA
It’s a throw back to school dinner days when you visit the Ikea furniture store’s Swedish diner.
Surly staff pushed mass-produced food at us as we shuffled along the serving counter making our selections.
That said, a fresh and intimate atmosphere is created in the dining area by Ikea’s trademark bleached wood furniture and dimmed lighting.
The chairs, however, are uncomfortable. Perhaps the store owners would rather have you back in the furniture shop spending money than lingering over a long lunch.
Rather like your old school dinners, there are a couple of hidden treasures on the menu; not least of which is the excellent Swedish meatballs, which is served every day. The roast beef (Dhs21) we tried was also well cooked, but the accompanying vegetables were lousy.
The shrimp and egg open sandwich we tried for starters was no better: the egg was fine, but the shrimps tasted of nothing.
We liked the fact that there was no waiting for food and that the prices were excellent, but Ikea really should improve its quality control.
