Al Hallab
Friendly Arabic pit-stop in Garhoud 5 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
Step into the frenetic lunchtime atmosphere of Al Hallab and it’s clear that eating here is purely a functionary act that requires minimal effort.
Each table is quickly decked out with undernourished olives, and after ordering the standard Lebanese mixed grill, the standard bouquet of fresh crunchy, cucumbers, tomatoes and assorted green leaves soon arrives.
Barely an inward breath later and the first basket of fresh, billowing flatbread lands, accompanied by an array of moist chicken, kofta and lamb. As imagined, this food ain’t staggering – the chicken and lamb is a touch over-seasoned; the kofta relatively tasteless; the tomato bread (always served with the meat in Lebanese restaurants) dry and chewy.
A side order of hummus is powdery and lacks its usual creamy smoothness, but the smoky aubergines of the baba ganoush are instantly pleasurable and packed with energetic shiny pomegranate seeds.
Al Hallab is a friendly pit-stop on a busy day, but to expect much more will leave you a bit disappointed.
