Vintage
Traditonal or cheese fondue with bottle of house wine. Dhs199/couple (Monday, Friday)
Vintage is a haven of fat and protein for the dedicated carb-dodger. Not only is the setting – ultra-swanky and subtly lit – a great place to gorge away your dietary depression, the menu’s emphasis on the basics is perfect for those on a low carb tip. Resisting the cruel temptation of fresh bread – damn its aromatic goodness – you should plunge yourself into platters of honeyed ham and tender roast beef.
Vintage’s real beauty, however, lies in its exhaustive array of cheeses. Those of you who’ve found their menus stunted by the severity of carb-restriction will relish the opportunity to make a decision once again. We opted for a fine taleggio – a rich, semisoft cheese – and the marginally less impressive (though brilliantly named) smoked gubben, whose full-bodied Irishness suited our bread-free needs to a tee.
Another allowable delight is the selection of Scottish highland salmon. This lavish platter arrives brim-filled with smoked, tartared and gravadlaxed fish, and a soupçon of jet-black imperial caviar, so you can fill your face on sealife without further widening your waistline.
A word to the wise though – you can have too much of a good thing, and without anything to break the taste a plate of undiluted salmon is a very rich experience indeed, especially when you can’t even reach for any of the maddeningly tempting bottles of wine. Despite that, low carbing at Vintage still represents a massive step forward from the bad old days when diets were all high-protein milkshakes, carrot sticks and grim rice crackers..
