Wafi Pyramids have been coming up with a series of seductive bottle-and-dish combos recently, aimed at wooing Dubai gourmets with an eye for a bargain. April saw punters snapping up Peking Duck and a bottle of red wine for Dhs169 at Thai Chi, a fabulous, dream-fulfilling combination which should be repeated again later in the summer. While the duck deal is no longer, you can still get a spread of dainty dim sum and a bottle of Matthew Lang wine for Dhs99 at Ginseng on Saturday nights.

The most popular combination of all, however, is the fondue bargain at Vintage, available every Friday and Monday night. Few dishes could be more deep-down comforting than a decent fondue, and when its set up in the soothing surrounds of this super-polished wine bar, you can’t fail to be cheered. Time Out tried it out on a recent trip to Wafi and was warmed to the cockles by the classic Swiss dish.

Here’s the formula: choose a cheese-loving friend and for Dhs125 the pair of you will get a bubbling pot of fondue, endless trays full of ripped baguette and a full set of pronging apparatus. More importantly, you’ll get a smooth, fruity bottle of rouge, picked to match your molten batch of garlicy, peppery gruyère. Dunk your French bread, try to avoid snagging long strings of cheese and fight your partner for the fromage scrapings at the end. An unimpeachable deal, and astonishing value for money: long may it last.
