Get down to the Al Dawaar revolving restaurant fast this month, because on November 10, it is closing down for two weeks for refurbishment.

Revolving restaurants used to be all the rage in the eighties, but have since fallen out of fashion. That is a shame, because a full revolution in Al Dawaar (which takes 1 hour, 45 minutes) is a spectacular way to view Dubai from 25 storeys above the mouth of the Creek. It is also about the only way to get a good look at this part of Dubai because the area surrounding the Hyatt Regency Hotel is low-rise and squalid.

A different all-you-can-eat buffet is served every night, and while we are rarely impressed with this type of self service cuisine, in the case of Al Dawaar we were pleasantly surprised.

The steak, which usually turns leathery after a few minutes of cooling down over candles, was succulent; while the vegetables had managed to remain crisp and flavoursome. The restaurant will re-open on November 25, according to our efficient waiter, and we’ll be happy enough to take it for another spin when it does

My husband & I went to Al Dawaar last Monday. I loved the ambience, very quiet and the fact that being a revolving restaurant is an invitation to enjoy more the ambience and excellent food.

The buffet was extremely good. They have a good selection of fresh seafood, including sushi, mussels and large succulent steamed prawns, and a good roast carving table. The salads, entrees and desserts were also generally good. There was one instance of bad service, which was quickly apologized for and generously rectified. Otherwise, service was very good too. Ambience, of course, could not be better. Overall, a good and memorable experience.

I went to Al Dawaar on a Tuesday night with my mother. I thought it was a fabulous restaurant! I'm surprised to see the service listed as "indifferent" in the review. We had impeccable service; the level of which I have never seen at home in London or elsewhere in my country. Anyway, we had a buffet service. The food was good, not mind-blowing but very nice, regardless. The dessert was great though.
