Toscana
Reservation-free Italian at The Madinat 1 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
With its prime location on the waterfront in Souk Madinat, Toscana is never going to struggle to fill seats, even with its confusing table allocation system. Reservations are not accepted, instead potential diners have to turn up and add their names to a waiting list and then wait for a call to say a table is free.
Be sure to take your phone with you, and don’t be persuaded to sit inside where the excessive lighting destroys any ambience. Given the difficulty in securing a seat here, you might well be disappointed with the unexceptional fare served.
The meal starts well, and the complimentary bread could not be softer. The tomato part of the Tuscan bruschetta is fresh, moist and perfectly seasoned, but overshadowed by its heavier side-kick, the courgette (or was it aubergine? – too dark and flavourless too tell) and cheese bruschetta, drenched in balsamic vinegar.
The extensive selection of main courses are all reasonably priced, and naturally include pizza, pasta and meat dishes. But the viltellina pizza comprising bresaola and olives is uninspiring and bland. The tomato-based pastas, though large and hearty, have an unnatural orange tint.
It seems that set in such a popular location where people queue up to dine, Toscana doesn’t feel the need to try and impress through its food.
