Mir Amin
Lebanese restaurant on Jumeirah Beach Road 9 Reviews
Among the million-dirham villas and plastic surgery palaces on Jumeirah Beach Road a new Lebanese restaurant has arisen. Eager to visit but unsure whether to reserve we took no chances and called ahead – a wise move as the restaurant was fully booked on the afternoon of our visit. Securing seats proved tricky as communication in English was somewhat limited, a fact that became increasingly evident over the course of lunch.
Mir Amin has a great atmosphere – the exuberant clientèle chat nineteen to the dozen over outstanding mezze served in portions sufficient for a binge-eating dinosaur. The tabouleh and rocca salad has just the right amount of punchy acidity, the falafel are light and fluffy flavour-packed bundles and the star of the piece – a gorgeous plate full of fatteh comprising mince meat, bread and pine nuts with yoghurt – stole our hearts. The only letdown is the grilled halloumi cheese: the portion we shared was inedibly salty and chewy.
In upsetting contrast to the masterful starters, mains are average at best. With the exception of the chicken kebab, the mixed grill we tried was tasteless and tough. Grilled hammour could have restored our pre-grill spirits but was sadly overcooked and dry.
Wires were crossed with the waitress when we asked her to take the plates and bring us coffee: our table was promptly cleared and moments later coffee arrived with a brown paper bag containing our leftovers for takeaway. Amused but pleased with this determination to give us our money’s worth, we left – still giggling – looking forward to a small repeat of what was in the main a delightful lunch.
