From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2007
As you’re shown to your seats under the fading 1970s-style lampshades that circle the ceiling, you’ll feel relaxed and at ease. And when you open a basket of siew mai dim sum, soft wonton bundles of tender prawn and pork meat and a dainty little crown of crab roe, you might start considering full-time membership of this particular club.
Move onto the Peking duck, which is ceremoniously shredded, arranged and wrapped at your table, with each delicate parcel containing crispy-moist meat, fresh cucumber, spring onion and rich hoi sin sauce. The deep-fried cod arrives in dark crispy curls that break apart to reveal soft white flakes of tender fish eclipsed by a sultry black pepper sauce, while the Schezuan aubergine is caramelised to a suggestion of sweetness yet is still pleasingly savoury. Best of all is the boiled lamb in Schezuan sauce. The substantial slices of fine-spun flesh fall apart like a lover spurned, but explode in wild tantrums of intense flavour. Only the seafood fried rice, with its occasionally chewy nuggets, isn’t a star performer. If you’re in a group, the treasure box and its numerous doughy Chinese treats, slices of cheesecake and fresh fruit is a fail-safe bet. We like The China Club.
There’s no membership fee and no awkward initiation ceremony. You don’t have to wait for an invite and there’s no humiliating selection process. The China Club is open to everyone who appreciates fine Chinese food and great service in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. It’s time to join.
