On race nights, you’ll have to fight for a table at Links, which boasts a view over the Nad Al Sheba track. When there’s no action going on, however, the chances are you’ll be the only customers. Perhaps the sight of staff outnumbering diners night after night gets a little demoralising for the kitchen crew because the food is unexceptional. That said, it’s not bad either, just uncomplicated and functional, and representing good value at such low prices.
The starters are served within a couple of minutes of being ordered, and unsurprisingly these have that straight-out-the-fridge temperature and taste. The crab in smoked salmon parcels and the prawn cocktail are both passable appetisers, although both are slightly over-drenched in mayonnaise. The corn-fed chicken main is a highlight, since it’s perfectly cooked, seasoned with a peppery punch, and served on a tasty bed of wilted spinach. The 12oz US rib-eye steak is, as the waitress cheerfully admits, ‘mostly bone’, and the edible bits are tasty enough if a little too chewy.
The ‘self-saucing’ chocolate fondant is the only thing on the menu we find particularly disagreeable; it’s a stodgy frozen lump filled with a lame and runny chocolate sauce. It’s certainly not a fondant. Service is friendly and helpful and prices are low – expect to pay around Dhs90 for steak and Dhs10 for side orders, while Nad Al Sheba club members get a 20 per cent discount. But you get what you pay for. Links is fine if there’s a race on and you’re in the area, but don’t go out of your way to eat here.
