When you hear that a restaurant is ‘great fun’ it usually sets alarm bells ringing that you’re about to dine in an establishment which dishes up mediocre grub and attempts to compensate with some off-the-wall zany theme that only serves to drive the staff slowly insane. Benihana is certainly an exception and provides some top-quality ‘eatertainment’.
The excellent, on-show chefs are like a cross between Tom Cruise in Cocktail and Jackie Chan as they juggle razor sharp knives, assorted cooking utensils and ingredients. Once three or more of them are on the go the steam starts to rise and you get the feeling that you’re eating in the kitchen: It’s a wonderfully entertaining and noisy affair. Look to the sushi menu for a perfect start to your meal; the highlight is the salmon sashimi doused in wasabi, which explodes with taste and then melts in the mouth. After your complementary prawn and onion appetisers, the chefs will fire up the hotplates and commence their performance, wildly tossing prawns and vegetables into the air while twirling their flippers faster than the eye can see. Winning offerings include the Benihana delight – a chicken and prawn combination – and the yakisoba noodles.
