It may be one of the world’s most popular Japanese restaurant chains, but Benihana is a long way from the conveyor-belt school of sushi. It’s all about the performing chefs here, in the tradition of the founder Rocky Aoki.

And while the dishes might not be the most adventurous or experimental, the restaurant still offers some of the freshest, most reliable sushi, tempura and teppanyaki around.

If you’re looking for a quiet bite, this might not be the place, but the showmanship of the teppanyaki chefs, who thwack out the food at your table with a high-speed theatrical flourish, makes for a hugely entertaining evening – and a great introduction to the cuisine for Japanese-food novices.

The nigiri, maki and sashimi pieces are very good, too, freshly made to order, though desserts can seem like something of an afterthought.

best of all Japanese restaurants,
top of my list, i go there every Tuesday for sushi night...

Delicious food, unique taste, high quality meat.

Had very slow drink service and the meat, especially the chicken was poor quality (thigh, not breast meat). The sushi was just ok but ordered the chicken, steak, and lobster and all were tough. The chef was not very experienced and missed on the tricks. Got a shrimp tail in my drink.
