Confined in one of Noodle Sushi’s bamboo laden cabins, you could conceivably be anywhere in Japan, such are the myriad reference points. Lightly painted Japanese murals anoint the walls, while the thinly tapered metal chopsticks – littered with Japanese insignia – are a rarity in Dubai. Factor in the swirly light generated by the paper globe lamp shades, and you have an utterly serene setting. It’s all a far cry from the hustle and bustle of your entrance – located at the top of the Safestway supermarket just off Sheikh Zayed Road, simply finding the restaurant is a quest.
Once you’ve discovered it (hint: it’s at the back of the building, up the escalators and on your left) you’re then offered two seating options – either the aforementioned cabins, or in the restaurant’s main body, where you get an choice view of the sushi chef slicing and dicing.
You’ll be thankful you made the journey when the salty edamame, the gossamer-textured Salmon shaki sashimi and crisp duck gyoza dumplings land on your table. From there, head to the tempura vegetables. Accompanied by a febrile ginger dipping sauce, they are crispy yet succulent – with the courgette cunningly sliced to look like a Green Giant high-five, the pick.
With little space for digestion, our handrolled Temaki rolls were whisked out. Like a savoury ice-cream cone wrapped in seaweed, the California version – rammed full of rice, crab sticks and avocado – was superb. If you’re after an authentic taste of Japan, there are few better unlicenced venues in the city.
