From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
Unlike most other eateries in the Souk Madinat, Ushna is situated away from the water, up in the shopping complex. Despite the pleasing decor, you can’t escape the feeling of being in a shopping mall. So what about the food?
The zanat e zamin and the murgh pakora starters – deep-fried mushrooms stuffed with cheese and deep-fried chicken balls – are served in such quantity that they are not a delicate way to start a meal. You’re offered a choice of spiciness for the main courses.
The spicy version of the murgh makhani is an enjoyable sauce-laden chicken dish with fenugreek, but there is little sign of the promised piquant kick. Meanwhile, the lamb in the gosht khada is tender and pulls apart easily, but the flavour of the gravy does not penetrated through to the meat. The black bean side dish is a triumph, however.
Negotiate your way past the bags and buggies to the small outdoor seating area and the setting improves. But this is still a place lacking in ambience, and you will find yourself wishing you had eaten downstairs on the promenade.
