Along with Chili’s and Fuddruckers, Applebee’s occupies a certain niche in the market known as ‘casual dining’. It’s where meaningless memorabilia gathers in cluttered corners; where beaming table staff aim to blind you with their brightest smiles, and where the food comes in very solid, very predictable and very large portions.
This Sheikh Zayed Road outlet will keep you bemused with its Beatles tat on one wall and its automobile parts on another. While you wait, suck on bottomless colas until the starters arrive. Dive into the reservoir of fresh tomato and basil soup, or get messy with the spicy buffalo wings before your humongous main courses are crane-lifted to the table.
The sizzling steak fajitas combine soft tortillas and a mound of chopped salad with sour cream, guacamole and salsa, while the porterhouse steak is big enough to build an apartment block on.
We’re not sure what’s so casual about systematically stuffing your face, but you’re in the right place to indulge, so finish off with the sticky toffee pudding, which will fill your veins with thick syrup and turn your eyeballs into sugar cubes.
