As the lunchtime queue winds its way into the neighbouring Lime Tree Café, LeNotre provides an impressive alternative if you want to escape the crowds. The confit of duck salad with figs and orange segments is particularly good, with the caramelised figs providing a sharp tanginess to contrast with the soft duck, although the salad leaves tend to look a tad weary. The crêpes are also a tasty choice, crammed generously with an array of fillings – the option with melted gruyère and ham oozing out of the folded buckwheat is our favourite, but again, the accompanying fatigued leaves lets the dish down.
The real star of the show is the dessert, as glass cases along one wall boast an array of sticky chocolate tarts, cheesecakes and biscuits. The intricate portion of tiramisu is simply divine, but they also offer a superb selection of cakes and gâteaux to take away – perfect for the cheating chef to parade after dinner. The variety of French cuisine and a tranquil environment makes LeNotre a great substitute for the busier cafés surrounding it, although the higher prices and slower service may be a tad off-putting for those seeking a quick bite.
