From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2007
From the window-side tables at this eatery on the ninth floor of Rydges Plaza hotel, it feels like you have the whole glittering view of Dubai to yourselves. Chances are you’ll have the whole place to yourselves too; on all our visits the restaurant’s been nearly empty. But this isn’t a bad thing as the friendly waiting staff, rich Chinese decor and calming music create an invitingly warm and welcoming atmosphere, verging on the romantic. There’s really no reason it should be so quiet – the food is very good.
While the barbecue pork spare ribs may leave a little to be desired in terms of presentation, they’re fleshy and tender, rich and sweet, with a hint of cinnamon spicing. The chicken san choy bow is infused with a smoky soy bean flavour, neatly complemented by the crisp lettuce leaf in which it’s wrapped. For mains you shouldn’t miss out on the crispy shredded beef in chilli sauce – every bite is a perfectly sticky melding of sweet caramelised sugar with just the right amount of chilli for a sweet/sour balance. And the aromatic crispy duck pancakes are superb – the pancakes themselves are soft and light while the crispy duck, hoi sin sauce, cucumber and spring onion combo is spot on.
Don’t expect haute cuisine, but this is simple, good Chinese food at a very reasonable price. And the view is quite fantastic.
