Amaravathi

Indian restaurant in the heart of Dubai's curry corridor Reviews

If – mid-mouthful – you get a phone call in this Trade Centre Road Indian restaurant, don’t even think of saying ‘I’m in Amaravathi.’ We can empirically advise that you’ll soon be apologetically picking half-chewed fragments of mutton out of the eyes of the person sitting opposite you. That shouldn’t put you off visiting this lip-mockingly named eatery, however, because its range of north and south Indian dishes is as impressive as its array of colourful original oil paintings.

For a cheap feast, choose the Punjabi Thali, which involves a mix of spicy curry, dal, dips and rice. Don’t, on the other hand, ask for the Amaravathi Maharaja Bhojanam, unless you intend to give your waiter’s spectacles a light dusting with semi-nibbled poppadom. Vegetarians will love the dark and rich saag paneer (spinach with cheese), and everybody will be smitten with the crisply doughy garlic naan breads, but there’s so much variety that you could eat here every week for a year and have something entirely different every time – all without ever mastering how to say ‘Amaravathi’ without redecorating your dining partner’s shirt a peculiar shade of curry-brown.
