Casa Maria’s

Mexican restaurant in the Green Community Reviews

‘See you soon when we’ve got our alcohol licence,’ the waiter said as we left the building. Apparently the prized document will be arriving in the next few weeks. For Fibber Magee’s, the Irish pub also in the Green Community and also – at the time of going to press – awaiting a licence, a few weeks must seem like an eternity. Fibber’s must be the only Irish pub in the history of drinking that won’t sell you a beer. They might just need the luck of the Irish because we’ve heard the ‘few weeks’ story before. When we went to the Velvet Lounge at Dubai Marina in the first week of 2006, the waitress said the licence would take a few days. Six months later and they still haven’t served a drop of alcohol. Unlicenced but undeterred, Casa Maria’s – a convincing body double for its sister restaurant Maria Bonita’s in Umm Sequiem – has everything else in place.

Near an unused piñata head and a Mexican flag draped over a fridge, we sat on tree trunk stools and admired the wall art reclaimed from MB’s unsuccessful Beach Road branch. After dunking far too many golden tortilla chips into exquisite salsas, all washed down with horchata (cinnamon rice drink), we tucked into soups. The tortilla soup was full of floating flour tortillas, chunks of avocado, cheese and chilli, and the cilantro soup was zinging with coriander and full of melting cheese.

Made with crisp browned flour tortillas, loaded with crumbly, potently spiced grilled beef steak, and surrounded by refried beans, Mexican rice (with tomatoes and spices) and sour cream, the burritos are by far the best in Dubai. Meanwhile, forming a striking tricolour agonisingly one colour away from the Mexican flag, three types of sauce – ranchero red, salsa verde green and chilli chocolate mole – covered the enchiladas trio. But it was only a mixed success. While the sauces delicately stroked a measured dose of tingliness into the tortillas, the chicken filling was disappointingly plain. The mole quesadilla, although better than it sounds, nevertheless combines chocolate with chicken and chilli.

With a bit of luck Casa Maria’s will soon be serving Coronas and margarita cocktails with their authentic Mexican food and there’ll be only a mariachi band away from the perfect night out.

There was a very greasy smell as we walked inside, I was willing to overlook this thoguh as it is a Mexican restaurant. The waiter wasn't very friendly, quite gruff, until two of his friends came in and he was all smiles. The food was average tasting, the best thing being the complimentary salsa and chips. The biggest let down however, was when we were served Indian chapatti in lieu of flour tortillas. Chapatti does not complement chicken fajitas. We had eaten and left within 45 minutes, disappointed.

It was Inside the Market.
Lunch set was not available today, so I ordered the Fajita Half.
She recommended the half size for me and it was enough for 1 woman.
Fajita was with wakamol, frifoles(creamed beans), cheese cream and rice. The rice's taste was exactly the same as I ate in Mexico!

After mulling over the other restaurants around decided to try Casa Maria's for lunch, and was really pleased I did - they had a lunch offer of a soup, main, desert and drink for Dhs39 and the food was amazing for the price (even at full price it would have been more than worth it).

Went for the soup of the day (avocado) which was very tasty, steak fajitas that came with a massive plate full of toppings and then a desert of crepes with ice cream.

Went back a couple of days later and had a chicken soup (which had a really good amount of actual chicken in), a shrimp main (name escapes me, it was excellent) and the crepes again.

The only thing that would make the place better would be a licence to sell alcohol, it's a tad cruel to see so many Corona branded things around without being able to drink one :)

Another Thursday night and I cant be bothered to cook, hey its the weekend ! We venture down to our local Market place in the Greens Community with an open mind and a hungry belly. We pass the usual line of eateries with waiters trying to coax us into having dinner with them to be finally pursuaded to have Mexican at Casa Maria's.
We were seated outside under a huge tree.. ah natural A/C !

Menu came and we ordered, but within seconds we has a bowl full of Tortilla chips and two bowls of the most yummy salsa. This salsa so yummy that I wanted to take this home and drizzle it over everything I eat including my cereal at breakfast ! The tortillas were devine.. removed from cooking 10 seconds earlier to give it that 'al dente' quality which I love.

I ordered Burritos and my fellow diner fajitas. The plate was huge with a buritto the size of a shoe ! The greedy person inside me smiled with delight at the size of the portion. It came with spicy rice which I jazzed up with the salsa from the tortillas, refried beans, yummy guacamole and sour cream that was whipped slightly so it wasnt heavy and claggy.
The Burritos and fajitas were perfectly spiced with mine being chicken and my fellow, steak.
We washed this down with some Habiscus juice which to be honest did taste nice at first but was watered down with the sheer amount of ice to nothing !
This place is a mexican jewel !
All in all, i enjoyed this place very much and will definetly come back :)
