Sumo Sushi & Bento
Japanese sushi chain on Beach Road 3 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
Were actual sumo wrestlers to stomp into this contemporary Japanese kitchen, hidden amid one of Dubai’s more vapid malls (and it’s not as though the shopping hubs are all-singing and dancing), the frighteningly efficient and fleet-footed staff would run circles round them faster than they could say: ‘I’ve got 20 fat rolls, how about you?’
For, Sumo Sushi is certainly not served by the weighty ones, but rather servers and chefs who seem to have adopted Japan’s sped-up sense of time and cook on a clock – thus making it a perfect lunchtime spot for Dubai’s time-starved business bods. But the stopwatch service is not the only reason to visit; the fare is surprisingly good and well prepared to boot.
Pick anything from the informative menu (which includes chopstick guidance) and you’ll be pleasantly satisfied – from the virtuous miso soup to the zesty tobiko nigiri or the fresh salmon sashimi – all of which come wrapped in a fashion-friendly cute bento box.
Alternatively, stop in: with comfy beige benches, sturdy oak tables and softly glowing lanterns, the decor is enough to put the colour back into the cheeks of any unhealthy, overworked diner – or, indeed, a sumo wrestler.
