Pizzerias, curry houses, Lebanese, fast food… The Marina is bursting with restaurants serving cuisine from around the globe, but for years it has been screaming for an Arabic-Russian-Uzbekistani restaurant. Okay, this isn’t strictly true, but one such venue has opened anyway – Gulnaz, on Al Sufouh Road, just behind the sandy towers of JBR.

The place, I’ll be honest with you, looks a little bit sinister. The exterior is innocuous enough, but inside the high ceiling, winding staircase and detailed murals depicting scenes from ancient Arabic and Russian life lend the place a cavernous, surreal air that’s compounded by the murmur of obscure industrial house music in the background. It’s Eyes Wide Shut meets oligarch hidey-hole. Inexplicably, I found it all rather fun and, as unapproachable as the staff looked (Russian men clad in black), we received a warm welcome and were virtually carried to our seats.

It was hard not be charmed with our Uzbek waiter who, despite his shaky English, went to great lengths to guide us through the menu – describing each dish in as much detail as he could, repeatedly assuring us that each one was ‘very tasty’ in his thick accent. Taking into account that my knowledge of Russian and Uzbek cuisine is limited to borscht and, erm, chicken Kiev (my date was surprised to discover that chicken Kievs were from Russia, despite the giveaway name), I was happy to follow our helpful friend’s recommendations.

To start, he suggested the samsa – an Uzbek pastry stuffed with lamb – and the chebureki, which was described on the menu as ‘delicious deep-fried pastry stuffed with meat’. Despite the dishes sounding virtually identical, our waiter insisted they were very different – ‘very tasty’ – so we ordered these with a side of Russian beetroot salad.

Happily, the samsa and chebureki were very different in flavour and texture. They were quite heavy and stodgy for starters (as you’d perhaps expect of food from this region), though both were good – the kind of dishes you might expect to be served at a Russian family dinner table. By contrast, the beetroot salad was a surprisingly dainty dish, which offered a refreshing light alternative to the heavier samsa and chebureki.

Our friendly waiter was back again to help us through the list of confusingly named mains. I started to suspect he had a thing for dumplings: he was trying to persuade us to go for the manti, yet another dumpling stuffed with meat. Despite assurances it was ‘very tasty’, we opted for the plov ‘bayram’ and, to humour my date’s surprise that chicken Kievs were from Russia, a chicken Kiev. As with our starters, both dishes were fairly heavy – perhaps a little greasy – but made for decent comfort food. The plov in particular was interesting – the rice was nicely spiced and the carrots and lamb made for good, hearty eating.

So, what to make of Gulnaz? It’s certainly an odd restaurant, though by no means bad. Perhaps my biggest reservation is that I didn’t find it very accessible – while it’s not a destination restaurant that warrants a trip from the other side of town, it’s not casual enough for a quick bite. However, anyone who happens to have a taste for Arabic-Russian-Uzbek fare would do well to drop in. The food is decent (‘very tasty’, if you believe the staff), and I doubt you’ll find another restaurant quite like it.

The bill (for two)
1x Samsa Dhs7
1x Chebureki Dhs7
1x Russian beetroot salad Dhs14
1x Plov Dhs30
1x Chicken Kiev Dhs30
Total (excluding service) Dhs88

Despite last few negative comments visited the place, as it is just next to my new home, and i can see the outdoor sits from my window, have to say food was very good, tried fried noodles called lagma and eggplant salad with honey cake, menu is extensive i have lot of things to try, the servce was little slow but sits are so comfortable you wont mind waiting, price is same as other restaurants in this place and portions are big enough so as for me, good spot for russian food.

Best Uzbek food in town. Definitely one of my favorites now.
It does not serve Arabic dishes as the review says, however food is very much suitable for Arabs.

Superb! We had a nice dinner for two here and service was very attentive. The samsa, shurpa and shashlik were outstanding, although the vinegret had a tad too much potato and not enough beets for my liking. My only complaint is that this kind of food has to be accompanied by good vodka, which of course isn't served there. Surprisingly the dessert menu was disappointingly short and consisted of just one item: honey cake, that wasn't even impressive. Overall, a great and affordable place that we'll definitely visit again.

And to the previous reviewer: I suggest you do your research prior to insulting the author as "the Russian food historian William Pokhlebkin claimed that Chicken Kiev was invented in the Moscow Merchants' Club in the early 20th century and was renamed Chicken Kiev (котлета по-киевски, kotleta po-kievsky, lit. 'cutlet Kiev-style') in one of the Soviet restaurants in later years". The ignorant believe that they know everything.

To Mr. Oliver Robinson, your review is very English in nature, as you are describing things with such confidence and get most of them wrong, yet try to be humorous at the same time, thumbs down.
Chicken Kiev is from the Ukraine, if you opened up an Atlas you would find that Kiev is the capital of the Ukraine.
The restaurant does not have anything Arabic about it, it is a Russian-Uzbek-Kazakh one, and the wall murals are from Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan, so get it right mister.
As for the restaurant itself, it is quite nice. Food is good, although not as good as my grandmother makes it. They put potatoes into lagman, which is quite Uzbek and wrong. But besides that it is worth a visit. I would go there again.

I go to Gulnaz every now and then for lunches and dinners, sometimes for quick bites (1 samsa is good enough to take you through a busy day till dinner). Whoever i visited the place with (colleagues, friends, date), all found the dishes very tasty and unusual for Dubai. To my opinion it serves the best Uzbek cuisine in town, with authentic samsa, obi non made in real tandir (clay oven) - something lots of Uzbeks carve for out here.... needless to mention their succulent main courses such as plovs, manti, kebabs, etc....
additionally, i think their service is one of the best in town: very friendly and helfull staff, they great us by name, and remember our drink orders without us having to repeat it all the time... Sometimes we are even treated for desserts, if it's girls-only night :)
Their manager Mr. Mohammed is a very friendly guy, who knows how to treat the customers... Their waiting staff, especially Mr. Arsen, is one of the best waiters in Dubai I've ever met.
Gulnaz is definetely a great place to try authentic Uzbek cuisine, and is worth every visit.

Good restaurant for those who miss Uzbek cuisine. However, not every meal on the menu is available at all times. It is better to visit the restaurant after 12 pm, otherwise you might end up hearing 'sorry that meal is not ready yet'. In my opinion, food tastes great. Definitely worth going back again. Hope the quality of the food will always remain the same or get better.

I'd be surprised If you'll find a waiter with perfect English in Dubai, unless the Management would be ready to pay him a high salary (why on earth they would do that if they get them hired for a lot less compensation). Accent doesn't matter at all, if you receive a quality service, i didn't get what waiter's accent has to do with the food and service. There are many things your date might be surprised about, e.g. that Hollandaise sauce is not a dutch, but a french sauce. You don't have to go to a Russian-Uzbek restaurant to learn about the origin of the dishes. You could do it from the comfort of your home by googling "Chicken Kiev". I've never read such a lousy and ridiculous restaurant review in Timeoutdubai before, simply just because I dined at Gulnaz many times and found the place very comfortable and inviting (and very clean by the way, unlike some other restaurants in neighbourhood).

I visited this restaurant 2 days ago with my family. I have to admit that this is one the best restaurant in Dubai Marina by far. The shocker is the prices on the endless menu. They serve all kinds of meats and seafood. Seafood caesar salad is my favourite. Staff is friendly and especially Mr. Mohammed, manager.
I cant wait to visit Gulnaz this weekend. I am going to bring all my friends because its a great place to hang and your wallet friendly.
Great stuff
