P2

Pricey seafood restaurant in Jumeirah Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008

There is only one problem with dining at P2 – the brasserie upstairs at the award-winning Pisces seafood restaurant in the Souk Madinat – and that is passing up the opportunity to duck into Pisces and sample its inimitable and impeccable fish creations. The oysters go some way to make up for it, however.

A dozen plump, freshly shucked shellfish arrive on a crystalline bed of crushed ice, alongside dishes of piquant sauce and slices of citrus fruit. Each one is perfectly fragment-free, wonderfully saline, and ranked among the best we have eaten in the city.

Duck confit comprises two delicately crisped, but moist legs on a mound of ‘bubble & squeak’, which isn’t quite the dish of shallow-fried English leftovers it’s named after, but a bed of crumbly mashed potato with cabbage and bacon, and utterly delicious.

A neat disc of beef tartare comes with a pleasingly runny soft boiled egg. When it comes to desserts, the crème brûlée is light and fluffy, if a little small, but perfectly good to finish off an excellent meal.

Most of the time, when you go in a high level seafood restaurant, this is because you love seafood and you want to eat something fresh and tasty. But in P2 (and so Pisces!) the seafood platter at 950 dhs for two with a glass of wine, you just have a taste of tomato sauce (maybe ketchup!) and chive; Indeed, you have a tuna carpaccio mixed with tomato sauce, and all the shellfish are cooked with chive, so you don't have the real taste of what you eat. Did they need to hide the taste of the shellfish because it's not really fresh? And for this price they only propose a poor glass of white chardonnay... Besides, the day after, my wife and myself had some stomach trouble...
That was my worst experience in four years in Dubai in a "high level restaurant. It's really too espensive for that quality.
