From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2007
Coconut Grove is an unpredictable restaurant. Sometimes the food from Kerala, Goa and Sri Lanka is fantastic, and at other times it’s very average. And the service swings wildly from polite and attentive to unfriendly and downright antagonistic. Yet its prices are very low, it’s licenced (bottled beers are particularly cheap), and it is home to some of the best views in Dubai.
Try the tikka masala, with soft and juicy chunks of hammour, with the kathrikai kara kozhambu (aubergines in a potently tangy sauce). The balti rogan josh, with tender pieces of lamb in a rich and fragrant sauce, is also delicious, and should be mopped up with flaps of flawless naan bread and pilau rice. It’s such a shame this restaurant’s so inconsistent because when it’s good, it’s great; a fine introduction to the pleasures of southern Indian cuisine. Unpredictable maybe, but worth the risk.
