Size matters at Da Shi Dai. Each dish is a snack, but put a range of them together and you have a varied meal that can be shared among a group. The ‘crystal prawn’ encases minced seafood and bamboo shoots in a white, almost opaque, dumpling, while the coriander dumpling does the same with chicken and finely-chopped herbs.
It’s all steamed immediately prior to serving and is extremely fresh. The chai siu bao comes enveloped in rich barbecued chicken and fluffy steamed bread; the crispy fried garlic prawn dumplings are as good as their word, and the mango crispy-batter prawn melds sweetness and seafood in a choice pastry parcel. But it is the creamy egg custards that shine through, with their crumbly bases and sweet, yolky centres.
If you want to try something different, opt for the cheung feun, a popular Cantonese breakfast snack made from square rice sheets wrapped around various savoury fillings. The lamb with cumin and leeks is packed with flavour, while the asparagus filling is a subtle combination of freshly steamed vegetables in a light sauce.
For many it’s all about the Beijing duck, which is served suitably moist with a musky hoi sin. For a real blow-out, try the duck alongside spoonfuls of prawn fried rice with sliced chilli, baby corn and spicy sauce, before rounding things off with the chilled apple and chrysanthemum tea jelly with fresh fruits.
Da Shi Dai is guaranteed to make an impression on anyone who loves Chinese food.
