Sumo Sushi
A new branch of the favourite sushi joint opens in Garhoud 5 Reviews
As one door slams shut another one opens. Or in this case, as one restaurant is built another one is about to be demolished. The original Sumo Sushi on Sheikh Zayed Road will soon be reduced to a pile of rubble, while the new outlet in Garhoud promises to take over where the old place left off.
It certainly looks the part, with its wooden wall-beams and signature squashed-pineapple slice lanterns, but does the slightly less prominent location signal a compromise in the quality of food?
In short, no it doesn’t. The seafood soup may boast a couple of meaty prawns and some substantial slices of surimi, but it’s a light and richly flavoured way to start. It’ll get your taste buds in shape for the maki roll combo, which features neat and tight rolls of fermented rice, surimi, fish roe, crisp cucumber and avocado, wrapped up in nori seaweed. Finish off with nothing heavier than a pot of green tea to avoid waddling out of the door like a defeated sumo wrestler after a comfort-food binge. But whatever shape you’re in, it’s a great option for lunch if you work in the area, and it’s set to up the ante among the other sushi joints nearby.
