Al Ijaza Café
Surreal Arabic café on the beach road 7 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011
While the inexpensive-looking exterior of this roadside cafe will probably be enough to keep restaurant snobs away, the inside is clean and presentable. A quick glance at the menu reveals a variety of curiously named fruit-based beverages, from the Computer to the Dubai Metro to the Titantic and beyond, the contents of which become known only upon enquiry. Food was an equally confusing affair, although overall this seems to be a budget burger spot with an Arabic edge.
After a quick inspection of the food on display, a shish taouk plate was chosen – which turned out to be the dish we’d just seen, warmed up – generously adorned with eight all-but-incinerated French fries. The second order, a beef burger, was served cold and cut in half, revealing a shrivelled and vastly unappetising looking patty, accompanied by an unexpected layer of French fries, egg and cheese, along with the advertised tomato and lettuce, which mercifully tasted better than it looked. Each dish cost between Dhs8 and Dhs12, and would at least abate hunger for those on an incredibly tight budget.
