From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011Tribes brings a touch of South African flavour to the Mall of the Emirates’ offerings. A chain, its decor is distinctive savannah chic, complete with faux-fur throws over chairs and rustic pottery-style plates, but there’s nothing too scary about this place. Thankfully much darker than the general mall eateries, the menu is heavily weighted towards meat lovers – think steaks, ribs, sausages, burgers and various meat-based pies. One of the few non-meat dishes, a rich fish curry, was suitably meaty and filling.
Tribes treads a fine line between serving up hearty, well-cooked food of ample portions, and being a kooky themed restaurant – the staff troop out and perform an African drumming medley at one point, which although pleasant, is something you wouldn’t want to hear more than once during your stay. The service is prompt and polite, leaving you to mull over the tribal decor and munch on ribs (bibs are provided for those that really want to get stuck in), and although the starters and main courses seem to be heavily inspired by Africa and Afrikaans cuisine, the pudding menu is a little less focused. A chocolate trio of three small gourmet puddings for instance (which were perfectly pleasant) didn’t quite sit right with the rest of the meal.
