Gastropub-style restaurant serves quality British Food 53 Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011

Perched on the waterfront at Souk al Bahar, the restaurant is reminiscent of a London gastropub – think white-washed walls, light woods, and chrome appointments. The result is resoundingly positive and Rivington succeeds in striking a balance between laid-back lunch venue and high-end restaurant. The menu is an extension of the décor and atmosphere, sporting an array of hearty British staples such as chicken and leek pie, fish and chips, and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. On our last visit we tucked into the pea and leek soup and the salmon salad for starters. The latter dish was expertly presented: a plump, pink cut of salmon resting serenely on a fresh bed of emerald salad. A rib-eye, a handsome cut of meat that was well cooked, proved a little too fatty.

A chicken and leek pie, meanwhile, consisted of fluffy, expertly prepared pastry encasing generous chunks of chicken, fresh leeks and a rich white sauce. It’d be unfair to say that Rivington Grill is an example of style over substance, but it is true that the food doesn’t quite live up to the environs in which it is served. This said, the food is decent enough and well priced at that. What’s more, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to peruse the Sunday papers over a pint of boutique ale.

Having dined at the Rivington at Souk Al Bahar on a number of occasions I made another reservation for last Thursday on the terrace at 9pm. We've always gone there earlier, between 7:30-8:00pm, and based on Thursday's experience will revert to the earlier timing in future.
I'd requested an outside table which we were seated at on time and then things started to go wrong. It took 10 minutes for a waiter to take our drinks order which arrived after another 10 minutes with one drink forgotten. We ordered our food and wine. The starters arrived and the wine arrived as we were finishing. Our mains followed and the glass of red my husband had ordered to accompany his beef was nowhere to be seen. A good 15 minutes after we'd all completed our mains our plates were still languishing on the table. Deserts arrived slightly faster but there was another wait for coffee.
Our food was superb but this particular experience was really let down by the abyssmal service. I realise that we'd dined at what was likely the busiest time of the week but that is no excuse.
We will return, but earlier!
One last thought. It's incredibly dark when you are seated outside. The mood would be greatly enhanced through the use of candles and would negate the use of torches to read menus.

I went for the business lunch last week and was sadly disappointed.

The mushroon soup to start seemed to have split and the best thing about my salmon salad was the beetroot! There were just specks of salmon on the plate, I felt a little cheated but was too embarassed to mention anything to the waiter. As my food was put in front of me both my hubby and his colleague apologised for ordering me the dish! Hubby's fish pie was "adequate" his words not mine.

My lemon posset was lovely though! A taste that reminded me of my childhood so thank you for that!

Fantastic location and great views with average food.
Maybe i was expecting too much because of all the hype before my visit

Always a lovely place to come and share good food and wine with friends.

I have been here often and have never had a bad meal.

They are part of the Jumeirah Group and therefore you can collect points on your Sirius card....they don't tell you this though. So make sure you have your card handy at the end when you pay.

Is great when the weather is cooler to sit outside and enjoy the fountains too.

I have been to the Rivington Grill on at least 7 or 8 times since it’s opening and always had a thoroughly enjoyable experience, therefore I am amazed at the reviews complaining of bad food or bad service. Apart from its impressive setting the Service and Food are the restaurant's two greatest assets, making it one of my favorite in Dubai. I always recommend it to friends who all report back favorably, including a friend visiting from London who is a restaurateur.

I was very much looking forward to Rivington grill but was a bit dissapointed in truth. The service was pretty ok and were generally well looked after. However the food was a big let down - lacked any flavour at all through the 3 courses. All the food was very standard and think it is very expensive for what it is. Paying 5 star prices for very average food is not great - maybe you pay for the view more!!

Been there twice in the last few weeks so have made sure that the first time it was not an anomaly. I can now safely confirm that this place is represents poor value supported by poor service contrary to what the reviews may otherwise say.

Rivingtons offer nothing less that just a bit better than english pub grub at but at 5 star price.

Without doubt the service is appalling (despite the reviews). Whilst the meals com out in good time it is a quest to get someone to actually take an order let alone acknowledge your existence.

Both times that i went the drinks orders were not taken until at least 15 minutes until after we were seated and then there was another 10 minute wait for the hot beer and wine to be delivered to our table.

I think the staff and management has a lot to learn and in all honesty I cannot recommend this establishment especially when there are so many other restaurants in Dubai offering so much more (Ravi's included)

In London I have tried the sister restaurants, but do not go back - there's nothing partuclarly wrong with them but there are more exciting (while cheaper) places to go to.

Here in Dubai the same standard is hugely appealing.
The food is not exciting, and some dishes are better than others (Steaks are excellent briliant; Roast Beef was likely an unlucky dau in a pub).
But the fact that the staff speak fluently a Globall version of English rather than a Regional one, are not obsequious, and do not interrupt me every two minutes, makes it enormously appealing.
I can't immediately think of another restaurant here where management is visible, competent, and could hold their own in London.
When I compare the bill to what I would pay in London I am reminded that for European imports, Dubai is an expensive place, but we chose to be here.

I would never take visitors from Europe here, but when one needs an escape from that feeling of being in South Asia, this is an excellent place to go.

Went to Rivington Grill with husband for wedding anniversay. Everything about our visit was just 'ok', nothing special. The only remarkable thing about our meal was the price of my THREE prawns which I ordered for main course, they came with no side dish had to order small portion of green beans- thank goodness for my husbands chips and delicious though they were I don't think they were worth 50aed each! We shared the sticky toffee pudding as we had plenty of room left after our mains, it was nice but you could buy similar in Marks and Spencer and heat it in the microwave at home! Think this place is pricey for what it is and you're paying for the location near the fountains which we couldn't see anyway as our tiny table was againt a brick wall! By all means go here but don't order the prawns!!!

Enjoyed a quiet early dinner with my husband last night, and it lived up to my high expectations. The staff were obviously very well trained, courteous, knowledgeable, and unobtrusive. Loved the sea trout special with samphire - don't often see that here. Crab salad starter was light, with slivers of apple and the freshest tasting pea shoots. The chicken pie was so good that I only got a meagre mouthful at the end of my husband's plate! I second the praise for the sticky toffee pudding - I felt like I was back home, 20 years ago, at my grandmother's - and that is high praise!!!!
The open kitchen was as reassuring as it was fascinating, though the chef's super efficiency meant that we were rather whisked though our three courses - they probably had another booking hot on our heels. But this was a minor complaint, and to be honest during Ramadan, you can expect that early tables will be turned quickly. Glad we discovered this, reminded me very much of the restaurants down Butler's Wharf way, menus, service and all, so will definitely be going back.

Great stuff, and the Saturday roast is lovely too.

The only problem is, it's sadly attracting people with children and nothing ruins a restaurant you love like kids climbing on the seats and making a noise.

Nice venue less nice for enjoying food which was less unique than expected. Prawns cocktail very very average, while the veal chop was not tasty at all and althugh medium rare the meat was somehow dry. A thumb up for the service, efficient and corteous.

It’s a type of place where you can easily spend 2 hours over lunch sitting outside.

I love the water jug and the way the food is presented.

If you prop up the bar you will find one of the best bar tenders in Dubai.

We loved it, informal yet chic. Stylish and relaxed. Wonderfully dry martinis whilst we waited for our table. Menu was classic British fare beautifully cooked and portion size were perfect even for me (100 KG!) . The Game Faggots were amazing... order again deffo!

Overall it was a fun, relaxed and dressy place where you flet you were somewhere special. Good staff, great food, excellent location over looking the fountains. Mid score on value, but that is the obsene taxation on alchol that Dubai levies.

Can't see why this restaurant gets so much positive feedback. Went yesterday for early dinner with friends, couldn't get any wine. One of my friends had Crispy Duck for starters, the duck was not crispy but half raw. Luckily the attentive waitress saw there was a problem and took the meat back to the kitchen to have it grilled. Our guests took steak tartare as he remembered it from a trip to Paris and said he loved it, unfortunately the Rivington version did not look nor taste like the Parisian one! My fish came without garnish and didn't look very nappetizing, luckily it tasted better than it looked! Another friend's fish cake was very small and not what she expected. Don't know how much the total bill was as I did not pay, but I cannot believe it was value for money!

I tried Rivington Grill yesterday with my partner and we did not have a great experience. The restaurant was not full, we had to wait for everything. The food took so long to come, and once on our table, it was nothing special. It was not even hot. We did not want to send it back as we did not know how long will it take. The meat was tasteless, the fish was ok. Only the pudding were great. Service was very average. We left very disappointed. We were looking for a nice place for a Friday lunch but unfortunately Rivington Grill did not meet our expectations.

The Rivington is DEFINITELY a family friendly restaurant and if you ask the management there they will readily agree. So if you have children like myself and husband who regularly frequent the Rivington and have done for a number of months with our children please do continue to do so. There are so many other restaurants in Dubai for non family friendly customers to visit instead.

The best restaurant in the country, as Esquire Magazine correctly pointed out recently.

But can people stop posting on here that it's family friendly - the one thing that would kill this excellent restaurant is squealing kids and idior parents who can't control them.

Please do NOT take you vile kids here. Ever.

I was extremely dissapointed with this restaurant, after hearing all the great reviews i was expecting a really enjoyable meal. I went to The Rivington Grill New years day, i found the scottish lady very unfriendly maybe it was because they had a very busy evening and she looked worn out. We had to wait 15 mins until she decide to take our order. I orderd the mushroom soup, then to be told me it's finished. So i said i'll have the prawn cocktail instead, i must say it was tasty however i found it to be over priced at 80 dhs considering it was small, it should of been no more than 60 dhs.
My fish pie was bland and a thick consistency, this wasn't pleasant. I didn't try the dessert's because i didn't want to waste anymore money. The bill came to 600 dhs, i felt like we didn't received good food or service therefore wasted 600dhs (100 GBP). If you really want to go to this restaurant i would recommend the business lunch which at 100 dhs does seem good value for money, otherwise they're plently of better restaurants in Dubai.

My wife and I went for lunch today. First timers and were pleasantly happy with the service, ambience and food. The service was good yet discrete. The ambience was nice as we had a window seat facing the Burj Dubai and Lake. The food was also good. My wife order the set lunch menu, nicely priced at 100AED, for three nice sized portions. I order a la carte. My order was as follows: Starter was the yorkshire pudding salad (interesting and good mixture), rabbit and crawfish pie (another intersting combo yet very tasty). My wife's set menu was a nice salad, chicken and mushroom pie (she says is the best she's had in Dubai) and a strawberry, cream and merengue pudding. All very nice. Price was ok. 375AED for the above plus local water and a glass of white. We would recommend it and return another time. Good job!

The best restaurant in Dubai. I was there 2 weeks ago.Forget about restaurant in hotel with their boring service and trying to sell the furniture as well. You are here in a real restaurant. Food is so good, very friendly waiters who knows what they are talking about. Toffee pudding was a dream.I saw the comment before, please dont come back to this place, they dont need customers like you. You should open in Beirut, you will be so busy. Tony

I've dined here almost a dozen times and I think it's one of Dubai's best brasserie style restaurants. However, you've got to be a fan of (and understand) the English classic dishes, otherwise don't bother.
The menu changes weekly and there are also specials every day. Some dishes such as the "Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding Salad" or the "Eton Mess" should never be removed from the menu as they are amazing.

Service is excellent, the staff are friendly and attentive without being too much. The management are also top class, as you'd expect from Caprice.

I think the critics on this board have probably been unlucky or were expecting something different. I'm looking forward to the cooler months as the terrace must have one of the world's most iconic views.

The welcome at the reception was very welcoming, they made us feel as if they were waiting for us to come. The restaurant was very bussy and it was a great atmosphere with people enjoying. The waiter was very professional, compare to a lot of restaurant in Dubai. The food was delicious. We enjoyed our evening so much. Now I know why so many people are talking about this place. Visited Rivington for my birthday, and i have only one word...WOW.
From the confirmation of our booking to the goodbye at the door... all spectacular. We all shared the beetroot salad, scallop, steak tartare and dressed crab, and couldnt find a single thing we didnt like. The sirlion was juicy and tender, mixed fish grill a pleasure in every mouthfull. If you a lover of liver the faggots is to die for. And then the moment we all been waiting for...dessert. My Eton mess had a chocolate birthday wish written on the plate, ( simple yet so classy ) with the sticky toffee living up to its reputation. As much as im raving about this place it will be a birthday i will not easily forget. Thank you to the friendly and attentive staff, keep it up!! PS not often you visit a restaurant where staff actualy look happy to be of service to you.

What a disappointment!!. After reading all the good reviews, I was excited to take visitors for a meal. I left feeling embarrassed for having suggested it
Most of what we ordered was 'out of stock', The wines were too warm, and the water wasn’t cold. We were billed for a wine we ordered that and was out of stock (as well as the one we did drink.) One of the meals came without the potato side order as stated on the menu.
The service was fair, but I failed to see any brilliance
Had the meals been great, the prices would have been acceptable, but for what one got, it wasn’t worth it.
Average!!

My pallette had been sleeping for a long time. Amazing service and welcoming people. I found it a tiny bit pricey but i mean for the food i cant argue. If i can go back everday i would but dont think my credit card can handle!!
1Xdeviled chicken liver starter(superb must try, so tender)
1Xcorn fed chicken (yummy and fresh)
1Xfaggots(taste sensation, gamey and full of bold tastes)
1Xsticky toffee(very average sadly)

I have heard so much good reviews and read everyone’s that I just had to book a table tonight. Unfortunately I had a stressful week and wanted a table by the window to feel a bit relaxed ,since the hot weather won’t allow for a nice outdoor dinner, but there were none so I have to do with a wall table  . I’m pretty excited, don’t want to put too much high expectations as I’m scared I will be judging it too much.

My review will follow and I hope I’m still as excited .

Bon Appetite everyone.

Have now been to the Riv Grill a few times and every time the food, ambiance and service has convinced me to return. Highlights have been the crab starter, the butternut squash soup served with a delicious herb scone, the roast chicken and the spicy steak tartare. Make sure you have room for the sinful sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Prices are reasonable by Dubai standards but might seem high if you compare them with brasseries serving similar food in the UK thanks to the exchange rate. Buzzy without being too loud, grown-up without being stuffy and formal. For those of us nostalgic for a taste of London, this is a great stop.

well me and my husband tried this restaurant because of all the good reviews we read here at timeout... we thought that its only an average kind of restaurant and we find it a bit pricy for simple british food, with just small portions, service was just okey for it took awhile to have our drinks , I don't think its good to seat near the kitchen itself for it tend to be hot... plus we thought its a smart casual dress code to come here but seeing other people or tourist in shorts and slippers I don't think there is any dress code in this place... we will be back but not that soon...

I can't believe this place has had so much good feedback! I went last night and it was really bad! We ordered the steak tartare to share and had to leave most of it as it had so much mustard in it our mouths were burning! None of the staff asked why we hadn't eaten any of it so I guess this must happen quite alot! Then the main courses arrived, they were average and way overpriced for what you got. Still no check back to see if we were enjoying our meals and there were only two other tables in so it's not like the guys were rushed off their feet! For some reason I still wanted to eat more so I ordered the cheese! Oh dear, Spinneys has a better selection! Left all of that. STILL NO CHECK BACK!! Will not be going back and will not be recommending this place to anyone.

Have been to RV 2 weeks in a row. Thought food was really well cooked, had Pea soup w Mussels, piping hot, tasty. Husband had Steak Tartare and it was very fresh, well seasoned. My seafood grill was great, fish, scallops cooked perfectly. Only miss was the salt they sprinkled on our Chocolate Walnut Tart and still charged us for. Expresso machine down so we never got that but despite those little misses we knew we would go back. 2nd time round the Butternut Squash Soup was excellent and the accompanying herb scone was delicious, warm and light! Asparagus on smoked salmon was lovely, poached egg was perfect. My husband had the Fishermans Pie and found it tasty and perhaps too much potatoe on top but still good, spinach cooked perfectly. Service was very good, I agree with others, service is probably most consistent that we have experienced in Dubai. Compared to lots of other places we think RV is well-priced and food is well cooked and comes piping fresh and hot.

Sorry but I cannot believe the above reviews. Had a starter that was a piece of Mothers Pride bread with some cheesy 'paste' smeared on it - no garnish of any sort, and that was about 9 pounds. My partner had a fish pie that came in the smallest dish and not one tiny piece of garnish to make it look any bigger. Staff very attentive - in fact overly so.
Admittedly the place had just opened so maybe they have their act more together now? l

Forget Ramsey and Rhodes etc this is a proper contemporary British restaurant. No waiters saying 'I not know sir....' these guys are trained properly and know everything about the food and what wine is appropriate etc. I found the place by accident and whilst having a glass of wine they let me taste the salt baked sea bass they were testing and when I took clients back the next week they prepared it for us off menu which they had offered to do in advance. Honestly the best restaurant in Dubai...substance and not just style. I would simply ask them what to eat and drink and trust them.....Fish pie, bottle of Sancerre, Eton Mess, cheese, espresso, sitting at the bar....The only London restaurant in Dubai. I love it

Without a doubt, here's a restaurant that knows what it's doing. It is confident in its food and its staff and it's quite unique in that the Rivington is rolling out food WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE !!! I have had the pleasure of several visits and momentum is growing. Dover Sole on a Thursday, Roast beef on a Saturday.........amazing desserts....you'll all have to be careful you dont let the place take you over. Truly excellent value

The first time that i went to rivington grill i was amazed with the food on the menu it was like being back at home.

This has to be one of the best restuarants in dubai, im a frequent customer and i have never heard anybody complain, the food is amazing and the service is fantastic!

This would truly be somewhere that i would take people when they come and visit.
and you know what it's not badly priced either.

If you like Ikea youll love the Rivington Grill as most things in it aré from Ikea, salt and pepper pots, hurricane lamps, candles, the service was apaling but the food good, think we just picked a bad night or as we were told it was the waitress's fault, not really fair on her but our meal was comped off completly, we would go back though, great menu, just dont sit too near the kitchen it will make you sweat just watching them and very smelly/smokey, felt sorry for the poor guy on the grill, but if your on desserts though you get to stand around and chill !

Since discovering The Rivington Grill I am a frequent customer. I have taken friends there atleast once a week and I have never had anything other than perfect food and perfect service.
The staff and management are the "best of the best" in Dubai.
They should start a training course for all other restaurants to show how to properly train restaurant staff.
