Sakura
Japanese food in the Taj Palace hotel 8 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011
Let’s get this straight right from the off – there’s nothing wrong with Sakura – it’s a perfectly well laid out, pleasant Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and teppanyaki stations but it’s hidden within the Taj Palace hotel in Deira – and we’re sure this large sprawling hotel was once bustling with tourists but today it’s like the Marie Celeste...no one’s home. As a result what would be efficient service is completely too attentive and we’re not left alone for more than five minutes. The menu covers all Japanese bases and isn’t so large it’s overwhelming.
On ordering the crispy duck however we’re told that it will take over an hour to cook, which is far too long in any restaurant to wait. We opt instead for tuna sashimi which is as soft as butter and pleasantly filling. A selection of dim sum are steaming hot and fall apart the moment you prod them with a chopstick – just how we like them. Sakura falls down however on a its crab cakes which would be better described as round balls of fried toast and are so greasy compared to the other dishes that they remain on the table. The restaurant offers an all you can eat sushi and teppanyaki deal on a Thursday night for Dhs89 which might tempt us in again, if we were in Deira.
