Grand Abu Shakra
Hearty Egyptian food and the occasional Turkish dish 13 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011
A lifeless rundown space, this restaurant was stone-cold empty at 7pm. The flourescent spotlights, mixed with drab coloured walls plus green table cloths and chairs wouldn’t win any interior design awards. To add to the atmosphere, the takeaway area has men coming in and out delivering large bags of rice – not a good ambience for dining. With no one there you could smell a fusion of dampness mingled with old oil and, if that’s not enough to put the diners off, how about Arabic TV blaring out from all angles of the room and slow service? We could imagine it would be quite a lively space once upon a time if packed, but this place needs a serious facelift or food so good it keeps you coming back for more. The food, however, which includes koshari, shawarma, houmous , tabbouleh and Turkish deep fried flat falafel, with fava beans instead of chick peas and sesame seeds on top, is just about average at best.
