At first glance, The Bombay couldn’t look more generic. There is not a whiff of north India in this wood-panelled haunt – until, that is, the astonishing food arrives. The posh, minimalist décor might be bland but the grub is spicy and about as authentic as it gets, without hopping on a plane to Mumbai. For starters, the tangy tomato soup and crispy chicken pakora are both pretty tasty, especially when surreptitiously mixed together. The chef’s special is the butter chicken, which comes with basmati rice and a well-endowed garlic naan.
The sheer contrast of flavours is sure to wow your taste buds. Have plenty of water on standby because the dishes are considerably hotter than it appears. For dessert, try the creamy milk dumplings in syrup – a sort of Bollywood crème brulee. Hidden away in the Marco Polo hotel, The Bombay is not the most ambient eatery, but the bargain food is definitely worth shouting about – and if enough people do so it will soon be rammed!By Time Out Dubai staff
