St Tropez Bistro St Tropez Bistro

Friendly mid-priced bistro in the Century Village Garhoud Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011

Nestled amid the twinkling fairy lights of the delightful Century Village, St Tropez isn’t necessarily a restaurant you’d find by chance. But it’s a quirky little venue, and worth seeking out: the ‘retro’ (aka slightly faded) décor has a ’70s feel to it, and the walls are adorned with hundreds of black-and-white photos of movie stars. Staff are efficient without being overbearing and, while the simple menu offers few surprises (a handful of steak cuts, plus chicken, seafood and salads), it makes a refreshing change from the endless, bewildering lists on offer at some venues. Steaks are nicely cooked, and are accompanied by crisp fries and somewhat undercooked vegetables. But the real selling point is the price: the entry-level New Zealand fillet steak is a mere Dhs65, and it’s tender and packed with flavour. The more expensive options don’t offer a whole lot more quality – stick with the basics and you won’t go wrong.

Good service, nice decor and ambiance, but the food disappoints. Spongy white bread served with Lurpak packets is a telling prelude to the remainder of the meal. The frog legs were bland and greasy, tasting more like vegetable oil than butter, and came propped on top of a store-bought lettuce mix. Hot food on cold lettuce? Big faux pas. Less disappointing was my duck, a bit too salty and dry, but passable, and my partner's steak with sauce au poivre was pretty good. Creme brulee wasn't bad, but again not memorable. Bottom line, go there for steak frits and a glass of red and skip the rest of the menu.

Does the best "cheap" steak in the country.

I've eaten here many times and never had a bad steak. And it's great to go to a place that isn't in a big hotel.

St Tropez is one of those no-frills places that is perfect for a budget night out. The outside seating area surrounded by the pretty fairy-lit trees is lovely, while inside the photos of old movie stars adorning every available wall space give it a quirky, intimate air.

The steaks are fantastic and great value for money. I always have the fillet steak with a side of steamed spinach and potato gratin, with mushroom sauce. It's one of my favourite meals in Dubai, and one of my favourite restaurants that's affordable and reliable.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

I've been here on many occasions and they consistently do the best cheap steak in the country. And it's great to go to a restaurant that isn't in a gaudy hotel.

What's wrong with you Time Out? Did they not buy enough annoying pop-up adverts?

Well I am French and I have been to this place a few times over the past few years.
The only thing i did enjoy there was there steak tartare. And the slade de chevre chaud. The rest is not just worth it. Forget the snails, the frog legs, the foie gras... That is just not it, overpriced, and in ridiculous quantity.
Service is crap.
I dinned inside twice, and as a non smoker asked if it was ok to smoke inside (a few tables around were smoking and i was quite annoyed with the smoke while eating). The restaurant manager quickly brought an ashtray and told me it was OK to smoke if i like. The table next to me was a couple with 2 kids...
Although Service Charge are illegal in Dubai (restaurants can be fined 100 000 AED if they apply it), this one is charging an additionnal 10%... Municipality charge!!
Allo? Dubai Municipality? Anyone doing any control?
To sum it up, bad service, food below the average (not even mentioning French standards for French food), over priced, and bad service in a so-so decor.
And the trend is far to be improving.
That was my last time there...
