Although most people wouldn’t associate decent Indian food with this mid-priced hotel chain, don’t overlook the slightly sterile exterior, tucked away beneath the Metro line in Al Barsha. Gharana offers up dishes from all over India, and splits them by course and by region. You can have an entire three course meal from one region, or mix and match. A starter of grilled and tikka’d fish is chunky and fresh without being greasy, and neither were its popadoms (always a good start), although they do come cone-shaped, which although makes them look good, also makes them very messy to eat.
The menu isn’t huge but its miles away from your standard korma, tikka masala and other ‘safe’ dishes. Rotis are homemade and perfect for scooping up the satisfying lumps of lamb in thick, tomato-y, spicy sauce. Dishes tend to be on the spicy side but pleasantly so. The only drawback is its lack of atmosphere. The food is crying out to be enjoyed in a dark corner, with lots of comfy cushions. There’s a live Indian band but the bright white decor doesn’t inspire a long, leisurely evening.By Time Out Dubai staff
