Head into the heart of Deira and you soon realise how big Old Dubai is and how much of it is usually left unexplored. Sitting opposite a small park area, the Marco Polo hotel is one of those places which once saw more traffic through its doors than of late but still has several themed restaurants which draw people in. Chopstix doesn’t open until 7.30pm (we early birds were caught out) and, ironically, is the only Chinese restaurant we’ve been to in Dubai that didn’t have the wooden nippers out and waiting for us. Or even offer them once we’d ordered.
Starters of crispy spinach, honeyed sesame lamb and spring rolls were hit and miss – the lamb arrived as crisply burnt shreds that didn’t seem at point to have contained any meat but the other two dishes were large and decent. Mains continued this theme, lamb with peanut sauce would have been better described as lamb in slightly spicy gravy and roast chicken with Cantonese sauce was just that and no more. Chopstix has a huge menu which looks promising; however, in reality the standard of ingredients and spices are as lacking as its namesake utensils.
