Dubai’s avowed mission to allow people the ‘freedom to express’ has been given a new outlet at this Cuban restaurant.

Staff, regulars and tourists have been encouraged to scrawl their innermost thoughts all over the walls – very funny some of it – and in keeping with the late night drinking hole atmosphere.

But while the bar and excellent Cuban band (10.30pm-2am) leave their mark on visitors, the same cannot be said for the restaurant.

Glasses of wine brought as an opener were clearly from the previous day’s bottle. This was corrected immediately with fresh glasses – and later with a surprise two free drinks – but the meal that followed reinforced the impression that this is a bar first, and a restaurant as an afterthought.

Our Ostras Fritas (fried oysters) were cold, and the melted cheese on top of the mash of sweet plantain (Dhs33) was rubbery. We enjoyed the Relleno de Papas (potato mash and grain balls) (Dhs23), but the Pollo a la Cuban (Dhs55) tasted like Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The Mariscada casserole (Dhs70) could more accurately be described as fish steamed on a plate. At least it had good rice and a great sauce.

The service was excellent – quick and discreet – and the tables well set. But nothing can make up for bad food.

El Malecon has acquired new management staff; let’s hope they make the food at this charming venue work.
