Delmon

Bargain Filipino food in the UAE Reviews

On the hunt for bargain Filipino food with a special hankering for merienda (snacks)? Delmon offers exactly that. If not Filipino, be prepared to get taken-aback stares from the staff and other diners. It’s to be expected: not many ‘foreigners’ venture into the restaurant. The interior is simple if somewhat shabby. Posters and framed photographs line the walls and bright lights unashamedly reveal worn tables and chairs. But service is quick and friendly, and staff are happy to translate items on the menu. The arroz caldo, lumpia and batchoy merienda impress, but the sweets are the stars of the show – try the halo halo (shaved ice and evaporated milk mixed with fruits), puto (rice cakes with cheese on top) or cassava. While Western food also features, we advise you stick to the traditional Filipino fare.

A pinoy's haven for real value of money as well as the choice of food you can carve for. Just watch out for your calories as the place is laden with sweets from varieties of regions in the Philippines. I definitely recommend everyone to visit this small eatery at the heart of bustling Karama.

A real value for money for those Filipinos who wants a quick tummy fix! Traditional Filipino restaurant where you order-wait-served-eat-go! Interesting to note that the food is actually flavourful and very traditional. We had Tap-Si-Log, typical Filipino breakfast of rice, beef and egg. Meat was just marinated as its best, tender and a little cripy. My friend had Goto, her favourite and she was amased as they used beef instead of the traditional chicken, but she was satisfied. We had Turon (friend wrapped banana) for dessert and Puto at Kutsinta (traditional rice steamed cakes) for dessert. All in all, it was indeed a value for money place. Nothing outstanding, very traditional, and a good value for money place.

Why does the review by Timeout staff gives the impression that: 1. Filipino food is such a bizarre fare 2. he made a trip to Delmon on a bad hair day Ad there's no such thing as GOZI on the menu. Did he really went to DELMON to try the food? I think he's pertaining to Arroz caldo, which from the name itself traces you back to its hispanic origin. The closest i can think of is GOTO which is the same rice porridge but instead of chicken, beef tripe is used. And his description of HALO-HALO made me laugh so much my tummy hurts. It is a dessert similar to Singapore's Ice Kacang or Kachang, both a yummy pile of sweetened bananas, colorful jellys, beans etc, topped with crushed ice and drizzled with milk and as a grand finale, they put either one or sometimes all of the following: your favourite scoop/s of ice cream, Leche flan or creamy milk custard or a scoop of sweet purple yam or Ube Halaya for Filipinos. I do agree on the bad taste of furnishings but come to think of it, having an Irishman's Philosophy there means they welcome foreign nationalities with such warmth like their food. And though the place is small, it is one of the cleanest restaurant I've been to in Dubai where food servants don't touch the food they serve with their bare hands. It is a big NO NO for heaven's sake. Filipino food is not as dreadful like how it's described here. I really suggest for people to actually try the food then give their honest feedback.
