Nothing irks me more than when a restaurant’s ‘soft opening’ is used as an excuse for bad food and bad service. I appreciate that every restaurant needs time to find its feet, but the good ones always open their doors once the food has been perfected and staff are suitably trained. Any speed bumps thereafter are minor and can be easily ironed out.

Luckily, Roberto’s seems to have done things by the book: the restaurant had only been open a couple of days when my date and I visited, but it was clear that the relevant precautions had been taken to ensure customers wouldn’t be turned off by their first meal here. For one, the management had been running an unpublicised lunch service for a few weeks before they announced the opening, meaning the multitude of staff who had been lying in wait for us were sharp and switched on. What’s more, the fact that Roberto’s has so many staff gave the expansive restaurant a busy, bustling atmosphere, despite us being the first guests to arrive.

Before heading to our table, we took the opportunity to explore the huge, sprawling venue, which boasts a bar area complete with a grand piano, plus two balconies and two large dining areas (to cater for both smokers and non-smokers).

The decor isn’t as slick as some of Roberto’s esteemed DIFC neighbours, but it has a certain charm that can be attributed to Roberto Rella, the godfather of Italian food in Dubai, who opened BiCE art the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah 12 years ago and is the man behind this new venue.

We took a table on the balcony with views of the Burj Khalifa (as well as an incongruous fake orange tree just inside the restaurant), before being talked through the menu. The waiter, who could have probably recited the menu by heart if we’d asked him to, recommended the goat’s cheese and the seafood salad for starters, followed by the veal risotto and 100g sirloin – a recommendation we followed rather than procrastinate over the extensive menu. Though I prefer concise, navigable menus (if only on account of my lamentable attention span), it was reassuring to know that a wealth of fish, pasta and pizza options awaited if I ever were to visit again.

The isalata del mare – a pick-and-mix assortment of lobster, sea scallops, shrimps, calamari, octopus and black mussels – was as fresh as a gust of sea air, and was accentuated by a piquant combination of lemon, parsley and olive oil. As for my caprino, the toasted bread upon which the goat’s cheese rested was rather dull, yet the ruby-red bed of beetroot gave it a sweet-yet-tart dimension.

It didn’t take long to dispatch our starters; by the time we’d demolished them, we noticed that the restaurant was filling up. The neighbouring al-fresco tables were taken by well-groomed middle-aged women wearing expensive jewellery, while small groups of young DIFC denizens convened inside.

It conspired that our main courses weren’t quite as satisfying as the starters. The texture of my slow-braised veal shank was marvellously soft, but there wasn’t much excitement to the flavour. My date’s sirloin steak, while wafer-thin (it was only 100g), was exceptionally tender and rich, and exuded a flavour that my veal would have done well to aspire to.

But the dark lining to this silver cloud were the potato wedges, which were limp, slightly soggy and decidedly un-delicious.

Desserts were a surprising high point – my madras marshmallow was spicy and sweet, tempered with fresh gelato, while my date’s fondant was decidedly luxurious. However, the taste was slightly tarnished
by the woeful wails of the singer and pianist, who really cheapened the atmosphere.

By the time we asked for the bill, Roberto’s had a buzz about it – not bad going for its second night – and while there were a few glitches throughout three courses, there’s enough variation on the menu and enough time to improve to warrant a second visit.

The bill (for two)
1x Caprino
Dhs68
1x Insalata del mare Dhs115
1x Veal and risotto Dhs155
1x 100g sirloin Dhs260
1x Asparagus Dhs25
1x Potatoes Dhs20
1x Spinach Dhs22
1x Fondant Dhs55
1x Large water Dhs24
Total (including 10% service and 10% municipality charge) Dhs744

We were invited back to Roberto's after experiencing it when it first opened hoping it would have improved and were disappointed by the service and quality of the food. My friend's steak was served cold and like rubber and even when she mentioned this to the waiter, he didn't replace it, even though she ate 2 bites. My pasta was over cooked and felt soggy and salty. Was surprised to learn also that Roberto's, Roberto himself who the restaurant was named after has also departed as was told by the waiter. Overall, we were very disappointed and the only thing going for this place is the bar area for drinks and people watching. We won't be back.

It would be helpful if someone would pick up the phone. I have been trying to call their reservations number for over an hour and it is always engaged! And this is not the first time I have had a problem making a booking. Luckily, I am not making the reservation for myself, but for someone else - looking at the reviews, I think I will give Roberto's a miss.

I have to say that despite all the bad reviews that I read, I went to the restaurants as I heard as per the word of mouth from few people that its good. I have to say that it was definitely a great place in terms of service, food and ambiance. I wanted to make sure to write a good review because it is so unfortunate that you read such bad reviews for such a good place. But again usually uNsatisfied customers are the ones who make the extra effort for the reviews unlike happy customers. But I would definitely go there again.
Freindly staff, Exceptional service, Excellent food such as scallops, carpaccio, calamari , beef tenderloin....all amazing
Would recommend to anyone who asks me

Hands down the worst dining experience I have ever had in Dubai. The staff were thoroughly incompetent, rude and pretentious.
Our starters were mediocre. We had the Melanzane and the Bresaola.
The main courses however were nothing short of foul. The Robertos Pizza was an old salad placed precariously atop a stale crisp bread smothered in oily raw meat. The so called sliced truffles were tasteless and no doubt originated from a jar. The Ravioli was very heavy and smothered in thick cream, lacking any kind of taste or seasoning; again, the truffles were completely absent, thoroughly contradicting the menu description.
The atmosphere was horrid, we were informed that our table was double booked so we had to eat quickly, and the air conditioning was a veritble Arctic wind pulverising our faces and making any kind of enjoyment impossible.
I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. It is quite frankly terrible.

Have heard a lot about Roberto,s so decided to take my family there for Dinner.
Was one of the best exprience i have had recently in Dubai from the time we arrived to the goodbye. We were being served by staff who
knew their product.

Keep up your good work and will be back.....

I went to Roberto's with my husband and our friends hoping to enjoy creative and tastful Italian cuisine but I wasn't impressed with what Roberto 's had to offer . The overall food was average and lacked any creativity in fact most of the dishes lacked any sort of seasoning ( the oven baked eggplant appetizer as an example) The signature Roberto's pizza was also disappointing and turned out to be a salad on a wafer thin crust ( does not qualify as a pizza crust) The grilled salmon was also dry and dull And the tuna carpaccio was extremely thinly sliced and lacked any taste The Ambience is not bad but not unique , the service is so slow and the waitress named Lolita served us wrong dish and the way she behaved was irritating need to be trained.... and the menu seems very pretentious compared to the food served

Went last week with a couple of friends and had one of the worst dining experiences of my life. The meal started out fine, the drinks were good, the appetizers were nothing special, and the waiter service was excellent.

However the entrees were disastrous. The pastas and salmon were good, but the Wagyu beef was nothing short of disgusting. We had ordered it well done and it came burnt with a charcoal flavor. After a chat with the manager, he offered to re-fire another portion, but it still tasted awful, like eating cardboard. Once again we sent the dish back to the kitchen.

The manager was refused to accept our criticism and insisted that the reason we had an issue with the taste was due to us requesting it well done, and that it would have been fine at another temperature, which is absurd!

Nonetheless, he offered us complimentary desserts. The chocolate fondant, the cioccolata and the marshmallow were absolutely divine, I would have been happy to come back again ... Until the bill arrived and we saw that we had been charged for the steaks we did not eat as well the complementary dessert they had offered us!

This is resulted in a minor spat with the manager over the check, whose attitude and utter lack of professionalism and customer service ensured that we would not be returning to Roberto's or recommending it to anyone.

3 of us went for drinks the other night, drinks were great but never has I witnessed the so called lounge manager being so unuseful. His attitude towards us as we are not Lebanese was on the verge of disgusting. After trying to get his attention serveral times to get a beverage menu again, he just sat down at the table next to us & started drinking, he made no attemp to organize a beverage menu what so ever. The only time he talked to the staff he was yelling at them infront of all the guests.
If this is a sign of the management, im sorry but the crowd will soon dissapear.
If its friendly service you are looking for, stay out of the lounge!

Went to Robertos with family visiting from Italia and was sad to experience below average service and food. The food ran late and was nothing special consider the location and high price. The Milanese tasted like rubber with very stale potato and my fathers main arrived cold and salty. We were very disappointed as we had high expectation. Can't say will go back.

Went to Roberto's with friends to celebrate a birthday and it was quite the experience. Our drinks were late, our appetizers arrived cold, salad greens stale. Sea bass was fishy and tasteless as my main course. 2 of my friends main course arrived 20 min after us and as we waited for them to eat, most of us ate super cold food. My friends pasta with seafood had shellfish that tasted fishy and not properly cleaned.. Besides my friends birthday dessert, the whole experience was horrible. Doubt will venture in for another year and hopefully by then they would have improved. Such a shame though as nice interior.

My visit at Roberto's wasn’t the best experience of my life....probably one of the worst in fact. My friend said it was the most chaotic service since he had visited India 20 years ago.
From the start I have noticed that waiting staff had very little knowledge about the food or wine. Starters were very disappointing so was bread basket. Looked hideous and contained of very weird, soft cake like ciabatta. My beef carpaccio was tender but the rocket on top was old, wilted down and looked like just thrown on the plate. My friend's mozzarella was just ok although the state of the plate was shocking when arrived to the table. My friend commented " there is more finger prints on it as it is in Brooklyn's crime scene plus it was dirty!
When mains arrived I wanted to leave. My tuna steak which I ordered rare, came well done and with a garnish of long dark hair. Had to tell 2 people for tuna to leave the table after 10 min of waiting. I was offered a pasta dish while I was waiting for a new steak.
Tortellini was ok although very heavy. 5 little tortellini’s were swimming in a half pint of cream! I have cancelled the tuna immediately.
As a nice touch we have been offered 2 desserts to cheer us up which was quite nice gesture. When bill arrived i was very disappointed once again seeing tuna, tortellini and even dessert showing on it!
Well what can I say? I wont be going there any more for a while. We will give a few months for a team to work on their performance.

Business lunch ended up being a 2 hr waste of time. A group of 10 ppl, we all ordered our main courses at the same time. The pizza arrived 10 min after ordering, whilst the ceasar salad arrived 1hr and 15min later. The seabass arrived uncooked and had to be taken away and the ravioli was too salty. The manager was very apologetic and offered us desert on the house since it was my friends birthday and a discount on the bill. Music was too loud. Overall will not be going back for a long time until they get their act together

Amazing venue, but terrible service, tasteless food and anoying singer (worst voice in town with a heavy italian accent that ruins all the nonitalian songs). i suggest more training, more practize in the kitchen and gt a new singer. There was however a fantastic waiter from east europe very charming and help us a lot, not like the rest of the staff.
